Hi

I was wondering - whats the best way to keep bettas. Im told they like still water and was told i could keep one without using any filters as long as i did a water change every 2 to 3 days.

Has anyone here ever kept bettas this way

thanks

Mostly all of us have at one time or another. I do that right now. :)

Bettas can live almost everywhere... I keep one female Betta, I only clean the water once every week and she's still happy.

i just got a 5 gallon with a filter and im putting a betta in it. but im going to put someother various critters in with it also.

I also have a male betta with only lights and heater in a 5g, there is no water movement in the tank, I do water changes when I feel like it, mostly 3-4 time a week.. lol, Its my wife fish and she spoils it far to much. We are only feeding it life food to prevent food from poluting the tank, and there is always some live food swimming round

Hi

Thanks to all that replied. I have set up my 10 gallen tank for a male betta today. One thing i notice - 5 hours after setting up the tank there was some kind of chalky/oily resadue on the surface of the water. Now i live in a very hard water area where the PH level is pretty sky high. I mixed up some solution of PH 6.5 Buffer. I think it may be that what has caused this problem. Anyone else had the same kind of problem or know how i can get round this problem please>?

Many thanks again

what sort of substrate and decorations are you using? oily residue is a bad sign. if i were you i would start over and wash everything in the tank very well.

Hi Neil,
I have a 10 gallon tank with one male betta, and I use a Tetra Whisper Micro filter running on low. The betta doesn't seem to mind it at all, and it is such a small filter that it makes hardly any currents. So, if you haven't gotten a filter yet, that's what I would suggest. However, I've only had it for a little over 3 weeks so I can't say if it's durable or long-lasting yet.

i have kept bettas that way and it very sucesful they are called barracks they atre handy for breed which i do

schzaam - Thanks for your reply - Did yid you you kept them without any filter or with the filter BigHilda mentioned.

BigHilda - Thanks for your reply - could you please tell me where you got your filter from plz?

Thanks to everyone who has tried to help me on this

:)

I got it at a local fish store. But, I did see them when I was pricing things at Petco. It was about $16-20 (US). It's not actually listed at www.tetra-fish.com, but they manufacture the filter. The replacement filter cartridge is listed at www.tetra-fish.com.
