As for your question, the bettas don't require special lighting, just what you have in your room (if you go with the hexes). This should produce little to no algae.

I keep two of my bettas in a betta hex. They don't seem to have a problem at all. Victor builds his nest and he doesn't even flare at the female. I don't think they have an attraction at all. He did for the first few days but she ignores him. They're both just happy. I keep my other in a one gallon unheated bowl and he's got a huge nest. (I do keep my room warmish though) None of my betta tanks are filtered. Just kept clean. And my bettas are very happy and healthy. All of them have vibrant colors and all of them love to build nests.
