Betta fry are teeeeeny tiny, so it wouldn't work to split the 55 gallon with any type of mesh, they would easily slip through during their early stages of growth.
What if I waited for awhile, and put them in there once they were a certain size....... Just brainstorming.....

That would probably work just fine, assuming the other fish in the tank wouldn't complain too much about frequent massive water changes
No, I don't think they will.
Would you recomend taking the substrate out? I have a mixture of sand and a little bit of gravel in the big tank.
