Ok, I have my 2 bettas in a divided half full 10g tank. The female is on one side so th emale can see her but not get to her yet. The male keeps flaring at her and shes interested, he zooms under his cup and blows ONE bubble  Then goes back to her trying to get her to follow him.. Obviously one bubble isn't a nest =\ Anyone have any ideas on how to get him to make a real nest? Should I just leave them be and keep them divided or if I remove just her will he make a nest then? It's been like this for about 20 hours.

I am not a breeder but my instinct would be to remove her so he cant see her then see if he makes a bubble nest and if so let him see her and then pop her back in. My boys tend to make bubble nests when they have been flaring at each other or when I clean them out and spoil their old one.

:D One of me girls are in the same kind of situation. . . she's in the middle of two males in a divided tank.

Eh - I don't think it's a problem. It makes the guy work for her affection.

Making a bubble nest is not essential, if you can get a hold of some bubble wrap and place that ontop of the water with some polysterene (half cup preferably) they can blow the minimal amount of bubbles into that and the eggs will be placed inbetween the bubble wrapping.

I currently have one of my males who blows pathetic nests doing just that and he has hundreds of eggs/fry hanging from the bubble wrapping pockets.

This is my second spawn doing just that and they have all been OK, especially as none of my boys blows bubbles worth a damn

I already have the half a cup thing in there for him to makle the nest in. I'll try the plastic wrap late tonight or tomorrow.

 one of mine has a bubble nest totally covering half the top of his tank and it is really thick...not a girl in sight though I think he is in love with his own reflection.

The thing is, a week ago before he ever even saw a female he had a huge nest in his little 1g bowl, so I know he can make em... But he just keeps trying to get the girl to come under the cup without a nest there.

You can try conditioning them separately again. One "cheat" I learned is to scoop up the bubble nest your fish makes in his own tank and transfer it carefully to the breeding tank. This will trick your male betta, thinking he made the bubble nest there and will simulate the conditions even more. Place the scooped-up bubble nest under a styro cup or a floating leaf (or anything that floats). :)
