I googled it, looked at pics, and am YOTALLY relieved to say they are all males. One is suffering from a bit of fin rot, but looks to be healing i hope, i couldnt find him for a while then i looked under a cave and there he was, hiding. I hope he's ok

Well,done for wanting to do what is right for your fish.  Stick with people on here for advice and do not listen to the store.  If you can try and get a larger tank from someone who no longer wants it as this will save you a lot of money.  As I am not in the US I am not sure of what options are available to you 

 
I would also recommend getting some live plants if you can as these help with the balance of the water, plus the fish like them 

  I would recommend an Amazon Sword as the Bettas like to laze in these, plus they are pretty hardy plants.
