Bettas Fighting On Youtube

I have watched most of the Fighting videos on the tube, and they are mostly idiots Boys and Girls in dorm room chucking a few in a bowl and watching them
There is a Video on there where they put 6-7 fighters in a small tank and watch them and goade them on to fight eachother.

It should be stopped but there are in reality tooooooo many people out there who will repeatedly do it and unscrupulious LFS LPS that will sell to them.

Illegal, possibly, but you're not exactly going to get the police out if you call them for people fighting... fish. It's a sad fact- if they're not bothered about all the other awful things people do to bettas (quart tanks for two bettas, wall tanks, goldfish bowls etc.), they're unlikely to care much about this.

I also wonder how feeding fish as feeders works into this cruelty thing. It is common practice to feed the fry of prolific breeders to carnivorous fish. And what about those hooks for the summer trout? How about putting loaches in with the snails?

I just can't get too excited about common adolescent boy behaviors. Every boy at the place I work loves to watch the Oscar chow down on the feeders. Oscar's Christmas gift was a 1.5" convict that was from one of the boys' breeders. Of course the convict outwitted Oscar, and then a staff took it home. We are not going to change the boys' behavior. With some effort some lps and lfs may change how they handle their fish.

We are Betta people: all huggy and wuvable. But the attitude in some of the other forums is much different.

If cruelty is an issue, I'm with Freeshy: the way many fish are kept is cruelty. The reality is the same standards just don't apply to fish as to dogs and horses.

On the other hand if you have the energy to fight like some do: more power. I don't favor blogging killing kittens and fish fighting and other rank idiocy, but I don't favor porn either or child endangerment.

Myself, I will not support YouTube, and it is on my no-no list along with Calvin Klein.

At least in CA, cruelty is the unjustified causing of harm to an animal. (Paraphrasing). Since feeding feeder fish to other fish and fishing for food/sport are presumably justified, there is no crime. At least it seems to me.

...okay first of all, why don't you stop spazzing before you start telling other people to stop. secondly, if they had to go on this site and see what wild beasts you guys are making of yourself I'd doubt they'll actually take you seriously. We had like 3 of the same topic in like one week and its pretty much unneccesary because the same things are repeated over and over again. I really think some of you are only doing this for the attention and you want people to love you and think you're like the Martin Luther King of all bettas. Seriously, "I'd rather watch people getting their guts cut out" or something like that shows you're just desperate for people to agree with you and go AMEN! or OHMYGOSH LIKE YOU'RE SO AWESOME. On the other hand, there are actually people here that are only posting their opinion and not turning into a diva shaking your finger at everything you don't like. Strong opinions are fine but overexpressing them and turning them into like flaming competitions is just pointless. Even if you have the slightest chance at making YouTube censor these videos, doesn't mean people can't post them anywhere else.

The law was not my point. Argument for argument's sake is not of interest to me. I don't see how the above applies to what I posted, since I was not referring to the law in CA or anyplace else. My post was regarding the nature of cruelty. I specifically made mention of some adolescent boys and their affinity for thoughtless and aggressive behaviors, including feeding live creatures to Oscar. (This does not clearly refer to our very mature youngsters like Wisperian. )

Make your point in a mature way that enhances the discussion and helps us all gain greater wisdom and insight. Otherwise it is just argumentative and immature rantings--imo

BTW: the subject of the thread is "wat do you think?" Make some effort to stay on topic.

However, I'm only against what YouTube is promoting - unexperienced fighting, and often longfinned bettas. If the bettas aren't fatally wounded and can be cared for after, I don't see harm in it.. but I doubt that is happening with those videos. However, I don't agree with the no offense policy being incorporated - something is going to be offensive to some people while others love it, and though I do think it's encouraging unexperienced teenagers to do it, there really isn't anything we can sufficiently do.

I am totally against allowing 2 bettas to fight. You seem to think death or injury is the only bad side to it and since they live, it is a good thing. What about the stress involved to the fish? The losing fish has to be fearful for his life. Fighting any animal is not an art form, it can never be regarded as harmless or amusing.
If you want to see agression, if that's what presses your buttons, go to a boxing match and watch 2 humans thump the living bejaysus out of each other. At least they have a choice about it and the loser could run out of the ring or submit and the beating would stop. Where is the terriefied losing betta to go ? Where is the timid betta who doesn't want to be in the same tank as another betta go?

I think that getting it removed will not work. By this I mean I don't think it will change anything. It's not going to stop kids from doing stupid things. Sure they won't be able to film it, but then will it be any comfort knowing that they'll just post it elsewhere? That after they find their video removed, they'll just shrug, go to their buddy's house, and fight them again? Censorship never really solves anything. I'd argue that it makes things worse since it promotes ignorance. Why not make a counter video if it's that disconcerting. One that expresses your feelings on the subject of betta fighting.

It is set up by state I believe...some states include "All Animals", others unfortunatly do not. (Checked on the Humane Societies website) Even so, considering the content is offensive, I don't see why we can't check with YouTube to see what they have to say.

Sweet! Apparently we can at least mark them for "18 and older" Which isn't the best, but it's better then nothing right??? (I just found one that I was attempting to find an example of, and that's the warning notice I recieved.

When I get home I'm going to be seeing if there's more I can suggest and perhaps try contacting YouTube directly and see if they're willing to do anything else.

it won't help at all, making an account and saying you are 75 is very easy

Actually, it was not my impression that K.J. was personally favoring aggression or had any personal interest in it. It was my reading of the post that there was room for those who are involved in the traditional S. E. Asian practices.

there youtube account should be hacked and destroyed(giving myself bad ideas ). and someone should also complain, like all of us here should complain to youtube.

also videos of nice large healthy goldfish being eatin by piranahs. there are alternatives, and making a video of it is just sick. i seriously cried when i saw this big large fancy goldfish in a tank, little did i know that there were pirhanahs in the tank, they ent after it and it was torn to shreds. those people make me sick
