Just got back from the beach... I wanted to go to this supposively nice fish store, but that didn't happen... So I jokingly hinted to my boyfriend, "instead of hermit crabs, these places (beach/souvenir shops) should have bettas!" He didn't take the hint, hehe. Anyway, we walked into Sunsations & there they were :/

Surprisingly though, they were one of the healthiest batches of bettas I've seen, at a "normal" store anyway. But here's the problem, they sold dwarf frogs too, and of course on the frog sign it read something like "low maintenance! You only have to change the water 2-3 times a year!" bla bla bla. So I'm assuming the care sheets they give out say the same thing about the bettas.

oh yeah, they had lovely intolerable tropical/techno music playing LOUD, which I know can't be good for them. Along w/ the cubes they were selling to put them in; they had those 1/2 gallon critter keepers, which can be ok if you clean the water more than 3 times a year, but there were also these square things, about 5"x5" and 2" deep.

Any ideas for a well thought out, informative, n i c e letter?

Is this new? Has anyone else seen them at these places?

Wow....... it sounds like it isnt a good fs! Tell them to look at this forum n say GOD DAMMIT! LEARN HOW TO KEEP FISH B4 YOU SELL THEM! lol sry! hahas I'm kinda hyped up today

    i just got back from vacation from obx and i saw the same bettas. i jus was there 2 days ago lol. i went to reef and i saw some aqua babies there. i was so said for the guys and then i saw a plakat haha. it was a steel and it was 20 bucks so i had to save him. where was your vacation at

haha :p

Yeah linking them here would be GREAT, but who knows if they would take the time to look. Maybe I'll send a letter to each location...

ah i c, well i guess its a new trend then, I don't remember seeing them last year. Ever hear of a place called Pet Safari? Thats the place I wanted to check out.

i haven't seen this or heard of it until now. kinda surprising but not really, i guess. as for a letter, you just need to flat-out tell them that their information is wrong, and then tell them the proper way to care for bettas and dwarf frogs. tell them that it's cruel to keep them in those conditions... basically tell them it is just WRONG to do what they are doing.

hey i'm from maryland, i'm going to ocean city in two weeks. ;) i always felt bad for those hermit crabs they sell at all the souvenier shops down there, and not necesarily because of bad conditions IN the store, but because when people buy animals as souveniers, they probably dont always think about actually having to take care of them. i remember when i was little it was like the cool thing to go to O.C. and get a hermit crab in one of those tiny little plastic containers. i got one as a "souvenier" and u know what i did? i killed it. because i was little and didnt understand that i actually had to put effort into keeping this thing alive. its sad that they are expanding these "pet souveniers" to include fish, because it surely means impulse buys by children and people who have no concept of how to care for these fish.

I never really understood the hermit crab thing, but if I went there when I was a kid I'm sure I'd want one. I wish I would have asked about the "care sheet" they give out, but I doubt they would listen (if by chance it gave bad advice) or be able to w/ the music... What is it going to hurt to tell people how to take care of a fish that you sell? grr...

I hope you have fun

I miss the beach... and the hermit crabs... Of course, I actually took care of mine...
