A few monthes ago I had 2 Platies in a 5 gal....until they had babies...now there's ALSO 4 babies. A week ago I bought a 2.5 gal w/ rocks and fake plants and put a betta in there. If I put 2 of the platy fry in the 2.5 gal and got rid of the adualt platies...could i keep the betta with the 2 platy fry?

So it would be-2.5 U.S. gal-2 platy fry.
5.0 U.S. gal-2 platy fry and a betta.

Is this a good idea?!

thanks...SiMoN

If the fry are to small the betta will have a nice snack between meals.

Sounds like enough space 5Gal for 3 fish but it the a pair then you'll have more on the way.

I had 2 Platty in a 5 gallon, and when I bought a new Betta male I put the Platties in the community tank and left the Betta on his own. Three weeks later I saw one little Platty fry all on his own, he was quite big and I was delighted with him so thinking he was too big for the Betta to eat (and he had been in the tank for at least three weeks) I just left him until later. But when I went back to fish him out he had gone, no sign of him anywhere. He can't have been too big for the Betta to eat.

Just make sure that your fry are much too big for the Betta's mouth.

That's some good juicy info...Could I mix him with the adualts...?

Yeah....I dunno:( 2.5 gal and a 5 gal...6 platies (4 fry of 1/2 inch each) and a betta....any other ideas?!

OH!! One more thing...The male that did his wild thing with the female died (R.I.P.) so i got a different mlae but he doesn't seem to be makn any moves (PHEW)

OH!! BRAIN FART!!

5 gal.-2 adualts and betta
2.5 gal.- 2 fry until they grow up...then i'll give them away or sumpin!!

SiMoN

Just curious by "wild thing" do you mean that the male tried to spawn with the female? Unless you really know what you're doing I wouldn't recommend breeding your fish.

Also, you shouldn't keep a male betta and a female betta in the same tank. (If you aren't I might have mis-read what you typed)

yeah...sorry. I should have been more clear. I'm NOT trying to breed. i have:

2.5 gal
5 gal

2 platy fry
4 full grown platies
1 male betta

Oh...one question....if a tank is 17-20 degrees C. is that alright for the betta?!

Thanks...SiMoN

That sounds pretty cold. I think bettas prefer 25-28C. 20C is the lowest temperature a betta could tolerate, and even then that's only for short periods of time.

Ek...that's not good...could he survive for...uh...six weeks?! Don't ask why...that's the earliest I'll be able to get a heater!! :(

I'm SCREWED!!

A 5 gallon tank is too small for platys either way, the minimum recommended amount of gallons for keeping platys in is 10gallons.

That's an idea...i remember once i broke my heater in my 5 gal. and went for a week by taking out a cup of cold water and putting iin a cup of warm water...could I got 6 weeks like this?!

As long as the temp remains constant, I don't see any harm in it. But it needs to remain constant I can't stress that enough. You're probably better off with your fish being cold than the temperature going up and down rather erratically. With the temperature fluctuating every few hours, it'll weaken the fish's immune system and he could get sick (just as a person running back and forth from a cold environment to a warm environment will probably get sick).
