i've been planning the start of a new ten/fifteen gallon community tank with livebearers, so the fry can be fed to my Bettas as live food (it's all i can get ahold of other than baby snails )
well, i went through Swordtails (no longer sold at my LPS) Guppies (not really a fan, plus i lacked a 'spotlight fish') and now i've remembered Mollies. i saw some gorgeous little buggers at Walmart who i just wanted to take home and squeeze to death, kinda like how people feel about kittens. they were Balloon Mollies, black and white.
Mollies are livebearers, Bettas don't munch on adult Mollies. this solves three problems!
Problem 1: Pierces lack of heat. in the community he'd be heated to 80*, rather than the fluctuating 76*-72* degrees he goes through every day and night.
Problem 2: my spotlight fish. Pierce would be the spotlight in the tank, and be made to look graceful (though he's a klutzy clown!) when surrounded by bobbing, fat, little Balloon Mollies!
Problem 3: my brothers current tank. he has a Black Moor in a Penn Plax tank filtered by a Penn Plax filter. it's loud, and annoying, and much too small. it's maybe .7 of a gallon. the tank that Pierce is in now would become Bug (the Moor's) new tank, and as far as i can tell it holds 1.2 gallons of water, which might not seem like much but really is for the little bugger. he poops up a storm!
now. the other tankmates would be an Apple Snail, three Cory Cats, two male Balloon Mollies and four female Balloon Mollies and an African Dwarf Frog. will it work? the tank is going to be heavily planted, so hiding spaces will be at a premium for all the fish.
