Bettamax...just curious:

I usually give new tattered bettas a shot or two of bettamax and it seems to heal their fins rather quickly, I like it. :)

Cool...thanks.

Samson has fin rot/frayed fins [long story: at first, it was just a few holes/tears. Thought he caught it on the plastic plant or had a blown tail fin. Used Bettafix..too slow/not working. Switched to Anti-Fungus (malachite green & acriflavine). Seemed to stop it. So I then went back to Bettafix to encourage regrowth. Seemed to be working for two days...then the tail fin got really worse. So I went back to Anti-Fungus. I'll wait the directed 48 hours and see. If that doesn't work, I'll use the Bettamax I bought today. This has been going on for a few weeks.]

I've heard good things about Bettamax...plus it has metheylene blue and triple sulfa in its ingredients. So I'm hoping I can finally beat this thing. Because of his coloring (deep dark orange, almost red) it's been hard to see if he has any blood streaks..and I've been checking even with a flashlight. I looked again today, with the flashlight and I could see a few little faint streaks on the very end.

He had such a beautiful tail fin too...one of the reasons I bought him. It was spade shaped, but ended in a point at the end. *Sigh* that shape/point is gone now.

i would get him some silk or live plants.......Squishy ripped his tail on the plastic one that came with the 1/2 gallon......so i got him and citrus live ones and they love them!!!!!!! not to mention the plants seem to do really well in the small tanks and the males like to build nests under the leaves.......good luck with fixing him. i know nothing about meds sorry

actually.....I have to take back my comment ....I was confused and thinking of bettaFIx...which is just melaleuca tree oil (all natural), I also know nothing about otc meds, I'm anti-chemical and treat my fish with minerals that are bought at the health food store. When 1st purchased I add colloidal silver while they're acclimating and it strips them of all bad bacteria within 10 minutes so they're healthy babies (touch wood) & then treat with a couple of drops of bettafix and I also use it at the 1st sign of any fin "fraying" that happens.
I have this female, who last week had some torn fins from backing out of her little "holey rock" house. She sleeps head in/tail out and instead of swimming in & turning around every time someone walks by... she backs out rubbing her fins on the edge and they had bunches of little holes in them, but goodness knows she won't miss an oppurtunity to beg  (I've since filed the rock down). Point is..... treated her once with silver & bettafix and within 12 hours the holes disappeared, healed completely. I've plenty more"miracle" stories but won't bore you with them  :p I've never used anything else on my fish though. Sorry for the confusion, if any....but bettaFIX is great stuff .
Hope something works for your little guy

Well, I put the BettaMAX (wuvmybetta ;) ) in Samson's tank last night. He's now swimming around in blue-green water looking like a little finned alien  . Directions say to repeat in 3 days...and if need be a 3rd time 5 days after that. While it's too soon to tell whether it's working or not, when I got up this morning he had huge bubblenest going! He hasn't really built one in weeks, not since before this whole fin thing started. So I think that's a good sign.

I'll keep you guys posted. :)

Oh...wuvmybetta...with a 1/2 gallon tank, how many drops of Bettafix (not Max) should a person use? Maybe I did my math wrong when I first used it and put too much in...which may be why it initially seemed to work, then seemed to make the fins worse. That way I'll know for the future.

hmmm, I'd say about 10-12 drops in a 1/2 gallon, approx 1/4 of a teaspoon

I'm so glad he's happy
I had an episode with torn fins last night myself so I need to run out ad get some bettafix,I'm out :X . I rigged up a 2.5 gallon divided with 3 bettas in it, it looks AWESOME! ,male/female/male, the female in the middle was so busy strutting her stuff in front of the guys, she was spreading her fins as wide as they would go and within 5 minutes of being in the new tank....her top fins split :X :X :X , she has a porcupine fin now

Has anyone ever heard of using Bettamax as a preventative med? I overheard someone at Petco talking about using it that way. I asked them more about it and they said they used to use aquarisol as a preventative med, but they prefer using Betta max on their bettas instead I told them I'm using aquarisol and the lady picked up a bottle of betta max and put it in my hand, haha. I put it back and told her I don't need it right now lol. She kept insisting on it though, haha.

I think clean water and a cycled tank/bowl would be the best preventative for a betta. And if the betta's got some minor problems, some Melafix or a bit of salt.

my lfs (which takes superb care of their bettas, good thing so I don't feel obligated to buy there :p ) they keep all of their bettas in blue water/bettamax, you can't even tell what color they are when your looking

Yeah the lady at Petco swore by the stuff...said it's worked wonders on their bettas. I've been meaning to ask Petsmart what they use...all their little guys are in blue water, so it could be bettamax...or it could be something else.

Maybe I'll ask tonight...they're getting in their fresh shipment of plants today, so I'm gonna go check out the hornwart for Solomon's new bachelor pad. ;)

But where the river goes, yes I've read some reputable betta sites, including breeders, that they use bettamax as a preventative. I'd actually been using Aquarisol in my unfiltered tanks ...although now I heard from some copper is bad for fish  So much information and opinions out there! :S

What I'll probably do in the future is when I get another betta, when I first bring him home, I'll probably quaranteen him in some bettamax first.

True, true. Though I do use some salt in the tank, along with aquarisol

Yeah, there's so much info out there...it can be really conflicting sometimes. I first read about aquarisol on a bettasrus.com I asked around about it and found it quite common. I'd never heard about Bettamax until I saw it at Petco. A bit too late though, lol.

I got home from work today and Samson's tail was a whole lot worse!! Obviously the Bettamax is NOT working. I checked the Bettatalk.com site and Faith uses Bettamax only as a preventative, but she doesn't consider it a cure for anything. And tomorrow was supposed to be his 2nd dose of Bettamax. :S

I think I'm just gonna get some Tetracycline and call it a day. I'll probably just do a 100% water change tomorrow and clean all the Bettamax out and just have him in the tank for a while without any medication at all for a couple of days or so and see how he does.

Should I try the BettaFIX again then(this time with a lower correct dose..thanks wuvmybetta)? Or should I just go for the tough stuff: tetracycline?? HELP!!

ok scarab
ya gotta trust me on this one.....I know people are if-fy about using people products on fish....but the stuff I'm about to recommend is highly recommended for all living creatures.
If you go to your health food store they'll have something called colloidal silver, it's in a little brown bottle and it's just what its named....silver suspended in a colloid of water, silver has AMAZING healing possibilities, the female betta I mentioned a couple of days ago....with the porcupine fin, it's completely healed already, no sign of tears or anything (that amazed ME and I've been using silver on my fish forever) but every time it works & always astonishes me, I've cured ich in my 29 with it (within days) ,that happened when I 1st started keeping fish. I've seen it heal fins before my eyes. I used it on a male that I bought who had a deep hole between his eyes and the next day it was gone, I kid you not.
It's basically a bacteria destroyer but it's also used for flesh wounds. Years ago drs used silver but it became so expensive tht they searched for a cheaper alternative...penicillin, now they only use silver for newborns eyes and burn wounds. They can't patent it because it's a mineral and nobody can "own" a mineral so....they just don't use it often because there's no money to be made for them.
It's soooo very interesting and really really works, I was sorry that I didn't take before & after pics of that female, I swear 2 days and she looks like it never happened, and they WERE completely ripped down to her body
I use it as I acclimate new fish so they don't carry bacteria into my tank, I treat all new bettas with it as soon as I bring them home, the ONLY thing it hasn't cured was dropsy on one of my little guys ,but I've heard that's next to impossible to cure once it sets in :/
I'll post a link to an interesting article in a few, it doesn't mention fish or anything but it does state that "silver is beneficial to every living creature except single cell organisms"
