Yes, use clean, de-chlorinated water.
Buy a thermometer just for your dip tank.
lol Test the water before you add the salt to see if the temps match, then mix in your salt.
Me personally, I always make up a gallon and keep it stored on a heating pad, that way it is the right temp all the time. I keep it at the same temp I keep their tanks. Also, water with salt will hold onto it's "temp" alot longer then just plain water..so leaving your fish in a dip tank won't cause too much of a temp flux to worry about...if you don't go longer then 30 min (well, that depends on how cold your room is too..on how long they can go without having a heater in the water.) There is no set limit on what size container to use either. if you make up a gallon you can divvy out small portions to give a dip in...that's what I do. I have a designated beanie box i use, and I fill it halfways with the Dip water for treatment. I usually throw in some frozen bloodworms too..so they aren't just like "now wtf did she put me in here for?" lol. All of mine like getting a dip now...they see me getting out the stuff and start flipping out lol.
Think about it...you are putting chemicals in the water....salt is much safer then chemicals. If they "pass out" all you have to do is stick them right back in their tank water and they wake right back up.
It's not like they are out for a long time lol. (that's why you stand there and watch for the first 5 minutes..after that if they haven't rolled...I doubt they are going to.
