Betta

I make up 2 gallons a time - my bucket hold 8 litres to the rim, so 7.6 litres - 2 gallons - fit nicely.

I put 2 drops of dechlorinator in the bucket, then run in 1 inch of cold water and wait for the kettle to boil. At this time of year tap water is cold and I need 1.5 litres boiling water per bucketful. Then I turn the cold tap on full and pour the boiling water in at the same time.
I know that Colin recommends letting the water stand before putting it in the tank, but the water is still swirling round as I carry the bucket to the tank. I ladle the water from the bucket to the tank using a jug, and I pour it through a home made colander (yoghurt pot with holes stabbed in it with a knitting needle) as pouring it straight in the tank digs a hole in the sand.
