Bigger is much better as others have said. I have two of my bettas in 3 gallon Eclipse tanks and those are just big enough to cycle so I only have to do partial water changes and the periodic water test to check that my levels are on. The other four I have are in 1 to 2 gallon tanks and they're a pain to do full water changes all the time.
Also, be aware that not all bettas live happily in divided tanks. I had a ten gallon divided and of my six fellows haven't find any two so far that will live happily in a divided tank. The ones that I tried fought through the divider until exhausted and completely stressed. I stopped trying after that, not worth it. But I do know that many people do it without that problem.
My bettas get pellets, frozen bloodworms, frozen brine shrimp, peas (which they had to be convinced was good but they all eat them now) and in the summer I sometimes leave water out and collect the mosquito larvae that eventually show up.
