Betta Won'T Stop Displaying

Do you have any cycled filter media in any other tanks? If so you could cut some of that out of a cycled filter and pop into your new filter, then it will be cycled already. No, just moving gravel over wont cycle it, because the gravel has all the stuff stored in it if you move it all the stuff in the gravel will just move.
You'll have to cycle the tank if you dont have cycled media, which could take upto 6 weeks.
Sand is alot better to use in betta tanks as its easier to clean. I use it in my tank, and when you get dirt on top of it you can get a thin airline tube and suck it up with that.
If you dont know how to cycle a tank then read up on it on the internet. How is your betta?
Do you have a breeding trap to put him in? You could also just make your own sort of breeding net, by getting a thin plastic tub thats been used to store peaches when bought or something like that etc lol , put a few tiny holes in it each side.
Also yes, they do get affected by nitrates etc, all fish do. Can you buy yourself a test kit? If your cycling a tank this is essential, because you need to read test results to find out if and when is cyced.

I fishless cycled the 63l with ammonia and have the test kits. I didn't think undergravel filters had any kind of media as such. Also can you use sand with an undergravel? Won't it all just fall through?

No sand cant be used in an undergravel filter.

You can put the betta in the un-cycled tank, but you will have to make sure you do daily water changes until the filter cycles :good:

Are the tetras nippy at all? if so, then yes its exteremly important for the betta to be moved asap, a rip in its fins can result in a horrible bacterial infection :/

If they ain't then a few more weeks wont hurt. Are you going to do a Fish-In or Fish-Less cycle?

They don't seem to be bothering with him at all, but then he just stay in one corner all the time while they have the run of the tank! I would prefer to do a fishless cycle. I have ammonia and test kits.

You choice :)

My Lunar, who died yesterday :( was housed in the community tank with 8 cardinal tetras, they got along fine. My other 3 male bettas are in a divided tank.
Its a hit and a miss chance. But see how it goes.

Ok, just noticed you got the betta 2 days ago, he is clearly sulking. They all do that, they sulk until about 1 1/2 weeks. So he just needs to settle in.

I don't think you need to worry too much about the neons.

Yes, it is true that neons can be nippy. Many small, shoaling fish can be nippy. If you do see any signs of fin damage or stress asa a result of beign housed together, then I would move the betta to his own tank. However, I don't think the risk is so great that bettas should NEVER be housed with neons or should be moved irrespective of the actual behaviour of the fish involved.

Keep an eye on things and take the time to cycle the smaller tank.

Thank you everybody for the good advice. He has perked up a lot the last couple of days and is moving round the tank more. Also I have removed the backing to reduce the reflections and I think that has helped. I think for the moment I'll leave him in there and just be vigilant for any bullying!

Do you have areas of the tank thickly planted with either real or silk plants? Bettas do like to hide and much prefer lots of vegetation, and planting up one or two corners and along the back will block reflections and give him somewhere to hide from the tetras .

I have real plants and the corner that he likes to hang out in has a lot of cover. But he does come out and have a swim around quite frequently. Just been to the lfs and liked the look of the dwarf gouramis. Would a pair be compatible with a betta and 5 neon tetras? I have the option of rehoming the tetras, which I'm seriously considering as I wonder if I should have more peaceful fish.

gourami's with a betta are generally considered a big no-no. As are neon tetra's with betta's I'm afraid ^^; if you want tank mates for him, perhaps consider cory's?

Hi, once again, Lunar (rip) was housed with Tetras and 1 Dwarf Gourami. It depends on the individual betta. He never had a aggressive temperament. The chances of a betta and a gourami getting along is IMO 20%. I personally would not risk it especially as its your first betta.

Hmm, what can I keep with him? Should I just bite the bullet and get him his own tank, and then I can have more freedom in stocking the community tank

^That would be the best possibility, when a betta is kept in a community tank, stocking has to be added around the betta. :/

A 5-10 gallon of his own would be good. You can usually keep most shrimp safely with bettas if you want some extra life in your tank with little risk of deaths and ammonia spikes ( shrimp are extremely low waste producers and good scavengers )

Tankmates are not essential for bettas though, they are generally solitary fish due to being so territorial. Sometimes tankmates work, more often they don't ( when it's fish anyway) and of course tank size dictates what tankmates you can have if any.

Have finally reached a decision.
Will get the betta his own tank tomorrow, leave the neons in there and get some guppies and a couple of dwarf gouramis (not tomorrow obviously!).

Thank you everybody who has helped me through this difficult first week! Who thought fish-keeping could be so angst-ridden :/

:good:

Don't worry, soon you will be helping others on this forum im sure. Thats how we all started, asking others for help!

Piccies will be great once the betta is in his own tank :)
