Betta With Tankmates!

I got a good set now. Male betta, 3 White Clouds, 1 Mystery snail, 3 Ghost shrimp. I was thinking a female dwarf Gourami but I read a lot about it being up in the air on if they will do well with a betta or not.

White Clouds are coldwater and need a 2 foot tank (15-20 gallon)

The size doesn't matter. The problem is that bacteria can only live for a limited amount of time without food and you have to get the right bacteria.
There is some bacteria in a bottle that 'may' work. But it's never a certainty.
Basic rules are - if it's not refrigerated then it definitely wont work and that generally speaking it's not worth your money. Just do a proper cycle with some filter gunk or mature media from and already cycled tank.

thats rubbish ive seeded 3 tanks with 2 bottle of the same bottle and they have been fine "off the shelf"

Every where I have read they say they do fine in 5gallon tanks. And mines are happy with the tank.

It's not rubbish walker101 - You are in the minority. You're speaking from your own experience. I'm speaking from many many peoples experiences. Not only that but there is also scientific evidence to back up the fact that most are not worth their money. Particularly when you can get some mature media/filter gunk that does the job and is guaranteed aswell as being relatively cheap/free.

Trabetta - I do agree with Jonty. In my experience, having seen white clouds and taking into account their activity levels/size I personally wouldn't put them in anything shorter than 2ft. Bioload wise they're fine for 5 gal tanks, I believe this may be all the sites you're looking at are taking into account. What sites are you using out of interest?
Just a note by the way, WCMM should really be kept in groups of 5 or more to give them the ability to shoal and feel comfortable.

if im in the minority then you can not say "Basic rules are - if it's not refrigerated then it definitely wont work" as for there to be a minority then it must work for some!

I use many but I can only find this one

Well, if you look at the temperature suggested on the site then they can't be in with a betta. Also, if you read the comments, they are active fin nippers.

see my thread above to see about peoples experiences with bottled bacteria. The majority say it doesnt work, but have a look.

And yet mines get along fin with the betta

OK, if they're getting on, that's all right, however I still think it's too warm for WCMM and IMO it's too small for such an active fish.

Oh and I would really recommend (in order of accuracy):

Badmans Tropical Fish

Aquahobby

Aquatic Community

And then fishkeeping.co.uk

Those are the best sites I've found without regards to temperatures, size and temperament guides.
But there are also species specific sites for some fish, such a catfish and oscars etc.

As for your situation - I maintain that I personally wouldn't have WCMM in that set-up (for all the reasons mentioned by Jonty)

I keep my betta in 24c and he has flourished and is happy; in there with him are black tetras and Ancistrus catfish.

i keep my betta in a 23l fluval edge (not a great tank but looks so good) i also have 1 flying fox, 2 platies, and 4 harlequin rasboras....oh yea and an african dwarf frog. so far all are happy, i think the platies are fully grown but after seeing a fully grown flying fox in my lfs i think i might have to move him into my bigger tank when he grows but as for now they are all happy.

as for cycling with chemicals i was in the process of cycling my new tank and i used tetra safe start with some fish and within a week i had perfect ammonia, nitrites and nitrates so dont be put off straight away some work.
