Betta With Ick/white Spot

thanks for your help guys the local pet shop didnt have the brand you have mentioned and the only other fish store is a 40 min drive away and didnt wanna leave it for long so i went for a brand called King British White Spot treatment, told me to remove my carbon from my filter which am not happy about but if needs must so i have used it the bottle says use every 48 hours should i use it every 48 hours or should i use it more often than that?

also my betta seems only to be swimming with one pectoral fin (a think thats what its called?) dosnt seem like he can move the other one much could that be from the white spot or something else?

King British is a brand I have seen around, but never used. Definitely follow the instructions on the packet.

You don't ordinarily need a carbon filter - it's supposed to deal with heavy metals, but your dechlorinator should be doing that anyway. After 2-3 weeks, the carbon is used up anyway - which is why the manufacturers tell you to change it.

Use the the whitespot treatment, as per the instructions, and if you haven't already, raise the temperature in the tank. The instructions will probably tell you to dose the medication after all the whitespots have gone, definitely do this, so that the whitespot doesn't come back.

Once this treatment is done, put a new carbon filter (not the old one) back in the filter, and leave it there for about 3 weeks. THen take it out, chuck it away, and put a new sponge or some more biomedia back in again.

There will have been some bacteria on the old carbon filter, so I suggest regular testing, and if necessary change water - but do that before dosing the medication, not after.

The clamping fin is a signal of ich as well. my Gourami had the same thing. And regarding the comment above, yes some medications are poisonous to fish but it all depends on the ingredience and how strong the medication is. When i removed my carbon filter i recieved 0 ammonia spikes. Try your medication and see how strong it is and if the betta seems stressed by it.

There are many ways to battle ich. Personally, I try to never use meds, if I don't have to. When I have had to deal with ich, I up the temp to 30c. This speeds up the life cycle of the parasite. I then add 1tsp of aquarium salt per 1 gallon (3.75l? I think). What fish do you have besides the betta? Some fish won't tolerate the salt. In that case, I would try to find a med for the intolerant fish and follow the directions on the bottle. Or you can try to use the salt at half dose.

i have the betta and now 3 serpae tetra's a dont think the tetras could handle the salt? but im using the meds now and i ave put up the temp of the tank to around 81f (28c ish) and if that clear it up then that all good :D

well using the meds has cleared it up rather quick betta has no more spots, tetras show no sign of the spots either betta is back swimming around normally and has even decided to start building a bubble nest :) fins are all flared out so i think he's better and a little happier :) should i carry on the treatment for another day or 2 just to make sure it has all cleared up?

Deffo, yes. That's the most often-committed mistake in whitespot treatment, and your medication probably tells you to keep dosing even after the spots have disappeared.

Follow the instructions of your med. Then after you've done so, run a carbon filter for a week or 2, to remove all traces of the medication from the water.
