Betta Vase Article

Anyone else see that article? I was at the library for a couple hours tonight and read through the latest issue of "Aquarium Fish Magazine". There was an article about keeping Bettas in a vase, with a plant. It walked through the steps of modifying the set-up so that the Betta could still get air. It also said that Bettas can *not* live off the plant (yay!). The author also mentioned some other species that could be kept in a vase set-up like that - Killies and I forget what else.

I wish more people would read stuff like that. I've had to correct employees at the local Petsmart who told customers it was okay to put a betta in a vase with a plant and not feed it. "Oh it'll just nibble on the plant roots, that's all the food it needs!"

Actually, it was a pretty decent article. I got my copy and saw it on the cover and was already to rip into it, but I was surprised by it actually. While I still don't feel the vase provides enough room (the usual vase anyway, you could probably find one that would but thats beside the point), I did like that they stressed the fish does NOT eat the plant, that the plant is there to provide hiding space and what not, that you need to leave room for the bettat to breath at the surface, the importance of cleaning it often, etc. I don't remember reading about other fish in that sort of setup, which would not work, but over all, I was impressed by the article.

I had a similar reaction to yours, MAM.

The other fish they mentioned keeping in there were some species of Killies (apparently breeders keep them in relatively small tanks, anyway) and Mosquito Fish, and perhaps some others (don't remember what, though).

The magazine was the latest issue (June or July 2005) of "Aquarium Fish Magazine".
