I want to set up a betta tank - I was thinking a themed one (like the Egyptian river on another post - excellent job!), maybe something along the lines of greek or roman ruins.. and sand for the substrate... haha! :fish:

well anyways - before I delve too deep into the actual design - I need to know the bare bones...

  • What size is a minimum for a betta (I want it on my desk so I need it to be quite small)
  • Do I need a Heater and a Filter?
  • What plants are best to put in there?
  • Should i include ottos or corys to clean the algae - or would the betta prefer to be left alone
  • Can you buy decent betta's off the net (cos my LFS generally only have all Blue or all Red ones)
  • can anyone show me some pictures of a small betta tank for inspiration (like 20-30l ish)

Thanks in advance! :good:

Aww thanks for the comment on my tank :good:

-The minimum size is argued, I'd say a minimum of 5 Gallons. I have kept a betta in a 2.5Gal but I think he's had more fun in his 5!
-You will deffo need a heater and filter. Make sure the filter you provide isn't to strong as the betta will struggle against a strong current. A slow current, just enough to move the surface is enough. The heater will need to be kept at around 75F+.
-Real plants, In my opinion, make the tank look nicer, and plants such as Elodia and Cabomba are used alot and should be easy to find in LFS. You could also ise Grasses and Java moss.
-If you would like to add corys I'd recommend anything sized 10Gal or above. When you do add them, remove the betta from the tank and add the corys, when they have settled add the Betta again. This is only because just in case the betta has set up his territory. Bettas are quite content on their own aswell and will live happily.
-Aquabid.com has some lovely, no wait, STUNNING bettas available. Some come with quite a price tag but if you want proper show or breeding bettas then I'd look there. You'll also probably get more tail variety and types than the pet shops which usually sell Veiltails, Which, I'll mention are just as cool! ;]

I hope you do get into caring for a Betta (Or Bettas!) I really thought once I got my betta I'd be happy, but I'm really keen on getting more! They have such personalities and are full of character!

Let us know how you get on!

:good:

Thanks for all the advice!

I'm going round loads of LFS's tomorrow after college, so If i see some tanks that are in my price range I'll post them up here to get the all clear - and then hopefully my betta should pop along very soon! haha!
