Betta Tank Setup Journal

Tanks looking great! You've done a really good job for the size it is. Well done! Can't wait to see which siamese fighter you choose :)

Tank is looking great!  Your light will be fine for the plants just watch for signs of algae and you can decrease light periods if needed.  The nerite looks awesome!  I loved my zebra nerite but it didn't last long in my tank.  I think it was older when I got it.  The olive nerites that I have at the moment were all small when I got them and they have lasted a long time in my tanks which is why I believe my zebra one was older.  As for the ammonia from the tap, using prime will help with that issue.

Wow, it's been a while!  I am finally back from my trip to Yellowstone.  The filter media that was seeding in my dad's tank is in place, and the nerite seems to be alright.  Sorry I don't have any pics yet, I've been busy since I got back.  I'll get some pics tomorrow when the sun is out again!

I've expanded my plants a bit more since I've returned.  Today I picked up another marimo ball (I love them), some moneywort, and another nerite.  I have so far replaced all the silk plants I started with, except for the silk leaves glued on my cave.

The new nerite is hiding somewhere.  I'm surpirsed I can't find him in my tiny 6.6 gallon tank.  I checked everywhere outside and I'm sure he didn't escape.  The older (zebra) nerite has disappeared before as well, and he eventually reappeared, so I'm not too worried.

Tomorrow I'm planning on calling my LFS to see what shrimp they have, and then do research to see if it would be possible to keep any.  I'll keep my nerite count at two for now.  Do you think two nerites and some shrimp will be overcrowding this tank?

Tank is looking great, good job

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone!
I saw mossballs at my LFS so I'm definetely going to pick them up next time I swing by.  I also saw IAL (to my surprise) at my LFS.

So far, I have some Aqueon betta pellets.  I don't know how good quality these are.  Here's the nutritional analysis on the bottle:
Minimum Crude Protein 38%
Minimum Crude Fat 7%
Maximum Crude Fiber 7%
As for live food, I'm thinking brine shrimp, tubifex, or blood worms.  Which one do your bettas love the most?

Another concern that I have is feeding once I have the tank stocked.  Be it snails, shirmp, or even pygmy cories, I'm afraid the betta will eat it all and his tankmates won't get anything.  Perhaps I'll wait until I see algae growth before I stock nerites or amano shrimp, but what if I get cories?  Won't the betta eat the shrimp pellets that I drop for the cories?
Moss Balls are great and I am glad you have managed to source some.  I felt I paid way too much at my LFS and bought my last lot from someone on e-bay.

LFS are getting better at stocking items such as IAL's but again I find they charge a lot for them individually so I buy them in bulk on-line.  I do like to support the stores and purchase a lot from them, often paying a little more in doing so, however, some things just seem ridiculous and this is when I head on-line.  PM me if you want any links.

As well as IAL's, Alder Cones are also a good addition for Bettas.

I am not familiar with the food you have but have had a quick scan of it and mostly people find it sinks too fast for the Betta, so you have to feed a pellet at a time.  It also seems to foul the water if it is not eaten according to some.  I like the moist food but this too can sink quickly so care needs to be taken to ensure the Betta gets some.

In respect to live food, I use white mosquito larvae (glass worms), which are the Bettas natural diet.  I find these are a "cleaner" live food.  They also like Brine Shrimp, but I never use Tubifex and only use frozen (previously thawed) blood worms.  There is another one I occasionally feed and I think these were Black Worms, and I feed one at a time with tongs.  I tend to purchase the more expensive foods that are in the fridge at the LFS, they are "cleaner" with less dead ones and in fact better economy wise as you do in fact get more in the bags.

See my profile for the variety of foods I use as some of these sink faster so you can ensure your other inhabitants get fed.  My Betta girls are the funniest as they sometimes grab the Cory pellets on route to the bottom and parade around with it hanging in their mouth, as if to say, "look what I've got".  They soon drop them though and go for other easier options that will fit in their mouths.

So I'm doing some research on amano shrimp, and I've grown quite interested.  They will be the first shrimp I own!  I've heard they are talented escape artists.  Below are some pics of the only gaps in my tank lid for the filter.  Sorry these pics aren't terribly exciting.

My main concern is here.

The other side of the gap, much tighter.

What Wildbetta suggests is a good one, with cling film wrap, I have also used a microfibre cloth before to cover the gaps until I got something more permanent.  I now have a lid that was on a container that fits over the hole where I think my Amano escaped from.  I find this easy to remove and replace when needed.

Looking forward to seeing the Betta in his home.

I've finally found a betta for this tank!  It is 2:30 AM here in California, USA, but when the sun rises again, I'll take pics of him.  His name is Rachmaninoff (the Russian composer)!

I won't describe his color yet, I'll let my pics do the talking. :)

OOOH  can't wait to see him!!   :D

Wow, that's a lovely tank. I wish I were better at tank design. I bet Kasumi would love some floating plants.

Alright, alright.  Time for some pics right?

Firstly, a new nerite!

And what we've all been waiting for!!

Flaring!

The picture doesn't do much justice.  The brownish looks more vivid and closer to orange.

Hi!

Looks like he might have some fin damage.

I'll be doing regular water changes.  Hopefully that will help it heal up a bit.  I don't want to add salt unless I need to.

By the way, this morning, I saw him building this!

I tried to get a video of him building it, but he stopped when I saw me coming.

I'd say things are going pretty well so far.  :)

Oh wow, he is beautiful! Love his colours!

He's a handsome fellow.
His colors are very subtle which makes them all the more effective.

Nice looking fella, was his tail like this when you got him?
He may have been biting it as it looks fairly uniform?

He is beautiful!!  His tail should heal up easily with clean warm water.  It does look like he bit it VS any other kind of damage and doesn't look like he has fin rot which is a good thing.  :)

He's got gorgeous colours!
Bet he loves your tank!

Love the nerite, it almost looks like a ladybug.

A few updates.

My betta has dropsy!  NOO!!!!  I've done chem tests and everything is fine.  I'm still trying to find a possible source, but seeing as he is quite new, he might have already had it.  Curse those little cups my LFS keep them in!!  I'll be on the look out for antibiotic foods.  I've done a ~60% water change.

Also, I've noticed some copepods scuttling around in the gravel.  Teehee.
