betta tank options

go wit the third, i have one exactly like that and iv had it for about 7 years, very reliable and my bettas always loved it

Personally, I hate the undergravel filters. :dunno: And if you want to adjust the current, you'll need a gang valve and all that good stuff. I have 2 of the 2.5 gallon Minibows, and I love them for bettas. One of them houses a betta and 2 cories, and they do great. The filter that comes with the kit is adjustable, so the current is just right for him. Then I have my pair of Betta foerschi in my other 2.5, and they are doing great in there too. If you get the "Betta Lagoon" (I think it's called), it comes with a divider and such, so you can have 2 bettas if you'd like. I know the colors sorta suck, but they also can brighten up a room. :) I've got the teal and blue versions. Just MHO!

I had a five-gallon MiniBow and had no problems with it (well, except that it was too small for all the fish I wanted!) I liked that the filter flow was adjustable. Even if one of the tanks you like comes with a UGF, you don't have to use it. I think a Whisper filter for a five gallon tank is fairly inexpensive and you could just get one of those to use. Wal-Mart also has a one-gallon triangle-shaped tank that comes with a UGF and a light. You could get one of those Azoo palm filters for it. The tank, filter, light, airstone, and pump (I think it comes with the pump, but I don't remember) costs about $10. I think they're called AquaViews or something like that.

im not fond of the undergravel filter either, especially wen dealing with fry. but u can always take it out, bettas dont need oxegenated water, or do they?

5 gal with adjustable fitler is preferred for bettas in my experiences..some really seem love a decent current while others want the water to be calm. picky little fish.

no, bettas dont' need oxygneated water, but a filter is prefereable. Though i've never tried a UGF before. If you dont' og with a filter, just make sure you stay on top of the water changes :)

 I purchased a mini bow 2.5 gallon tank with the filter. However, when it arrived the filter they sent was much too big for the tank and it wouldn't even sit on the side of the tank because of the lip. The cover wouldn't fit, etc. I returned everything.

Would a small air pump with a small sponge filter work well with that? What about heat? Is the light system enough to keep the water warm enough or do you need a small heater?

Yeah, the filter they put with the 2.5 gallon is a little big. It's the same one for the 5 gallon, and it's borderline big for that. A 2.5 either needs a tiny filter or HOB filter, in my opinion.

I think a sponge filter would work okay for a tank like that, but I have no experience with sponge filters, so I could be wrong.

Whether or not you need a heater depends on the temperature of the room the tank is in. The light should be enough to keep it warm enough during the day, at least in most cases.

The filter hangs inside the tank. I've never had a problem fitting it in, though I agree it's rather large. It seems to do a good job though, so I've always left them in. It has suction cups on the back, along with a clip for along the ledge of the tank. The hood sits a bit funny on it, but it still works!

The picture below is one of my 2.5s. You can see the Whisper filter behind a plant in the back left. It hangs an inch or so above the gravel.
