Betta tank ideas

Hank is heck of a lot smarter than my Franklin, who looks for his food as it bounces off his nose

I have anubias lanceolata in my Franklin's tank. It is still growing, but its a good anubias option for taller betta tanks.

My only complaint with salvinia is that it blocks a lot of surface movement in the water. Film and dust on the water build up between the plants easy.

But it grows soooo fast.

Now a tip, take a plastic bendy straw, or airline tube and make a loop out of those. Contain the salvinia or duckweed inside the barrier. Get the benefit of floaters, but also doesnt block too much surface agitation.

That's a wonderful idea, thank you!

Also, while I've got you guys here I'm nervous about this water change. Hank is due for one (I read one forum and now I'm absolutely terrified of dropsy) but now I can't get it out of my head that he got so sick because I was doing them wrong. Is it okay to dechlorinate after the water has been added? Additionally, my current water change tool is a maybe 2 gallon trash can. Will it put him back into shock to do the 3-5 trips it takes, both for removal and addition? I can siphon water out with my new gravel vac if that would help
That's really good to know, thank you. Juicebox just told me to add the full dose beforehand too, so I'm glad that I asked before I did it. That may be why he stayed so sick.

This needs explaining. For those of us with larger tanks, using for example a Python faucet connector for water changes, it is fine to add the dechlorinator as you start to fill the tank. This is not advisable in small tanks such as a 10 gallon. The much smaller volume of water in the tank means that the chlorinated water is rapidly dispersing. I also find it too easy to overflow the tank using the Python.

For small tanks like a 10 gallon, if you remove half of the tank water it will likely be roughly two buckets (a 2-3 gallon bucket is standard). To refill the tank, run the water into the empty bucket and add the required amoount of dechlorinator for the volume in the bucket. You obviously can adjust the water temperature before you fill the bucket. Dechlorinators work instantly, so by the time you start adding this bucket of water to the tank, it will be safe to use. I use one of those plastic pitchers made for juice to pour the water into the tank, it is less likely to make a mess. The prepare the second bucket of water the same way.

That's an awesome explanation, thank you so much! I was really worried about doing it wrong lol
