The "hammock" is actually a fake silk plant. Because poor Modo has Swim Bladder Disorder it's hard for him to move around too much without being pulled to the bottom of the tank. He figured out that he could sit in it and not have to struggle to swim to the top of the tank for some air.

... And who said fish aren't smart or don't have personalities?!
