Betta Love

...The ONLY time she stuck up for herself was when I fed them some bloodworms...he ran over to grab some and she finally snapped at him
How typical! Isn't it just like a male to forget about the important stuff.......but come dinner time, he's right there! :D

Good Luck on spawning the crown and the orange female. Like everyone else says the outcome of fry will be weird. You wil lbe updating us through the breeding right? Maby you should try and find another female for your male. It is a shame that you can't get your 2 oranges to breed though.

   no kidding

The only thing I was really impressed with him doing is getting right to work on his nest. He builds the neatest of all my males. He has a tall plant that has circled "flowers" I guess they are, he'll build his nest on the underfold of each flower at the water surface. They're so neat looking when he's done because you can't hardly see his nest at all unless you look under the flower.

I haven't given up on them completely, I'll try them again in the future. For now though, my female is so conditioned she's ready to explode so I gotsta do what I gotsta do (plus I've wanted to breed the crowntail with her ever since he was given to me :p  )

I moved the crown and the female into the breeder yesterday. She was so excited and he was a little slow at building his nest so I just left them alone all night. The female was in her hurricane vase.
Anyway...I woke up this morning and peeked in at them to see if he built a nest yet. He had. BUT SHE, ohhhh she must have been more excited then I thought. At the bottom of her vase ,on the aquarium floor were millions and millions of eggs  , I didn't know the female could just drop them without a squeeze from the male  . I don't think that's normal so I'm trying to figure out exactly what she's up to.

I released her anyway and cleaned up a lot of the eggs with a baster and she began eating the rest. I'm about ready to just remove her and try again after the Holidays  :sly:

Why oh why must she be so difficult

Caviar anyone? :p

Maybe you should have removed the female and put the male in with the eggs. Maybe he might have instinctively known what to do. It's worth a shot.

I left the eggs with him for a couple of hours. She just ran and hid behind the corner filter so he had a chance but he didn't do anything. I think he was confused & thinking "uhhhm, this isn't exactly how it's supposed to go"

I just put them back in their own tanks. I'm too paranoid of losing her and she looked pretty upset/stressed, not at all like her usual chipper self. I'd die if anything happened to her...not just because of the emotional attachment but also because this isn't just any cheapo run of the mill betta were talking about.

My main concern was her being so full of eggs...well now she's a skinny minnie  , so that's ok

In a week or so I'm going to isolate her and the orange male from ALL bettas. Then I'll try again, I think that might give me better results with them.

What sucks is...AFTER I bought them I clicked on the link to the orange strain info and they were recommended for "experienced breeders" , I wondered what could be more difficult and what makes one betta harder to breed than another...now I know

That's gotta suck! I've heard of females dropping their eggs on there own before so I don't think you have anything to worry about there. Just a shame she couldn't hold them for a while longer! :p
I think what you are doing by putting the 2 orange bettas away from the other by themselves is a good idea. With any luck they should breed that way! Have you ever bred bettas before?

I've never wanted/tried to breed veitails before... I didn't see the point in bringing bettas into the world only for them to wither and die in a lfs or something :/ . That's why I got the high dollar orangies, I figured if someone wanted to dish out a pretty penny for a rare betta they would definately take care of it ;)

I've considered trying a few of my plain jane bettas at breeding, but honestly...I don't WANT their fry and I'd probably just end up feeding them to my cichlids, but I really don't know if I have the heart to do that

infusoria, then at about a week old they should start takin live bbs

Uh oh... I was reading up on orange bettas trying to get a color/fin combo on your matchup and I came across a fact that orange is a VERY DELICATE color to work with and it could be lost in subsequent generations since the color is recessive.

Yeah, that makes sense -_- , I'm just going to stick with orange and orange from here on out ;) , forget mixing em up.
