Betta lost tail

Sand. Filter is a filter that came with the tank it's an overflow filter. Decore is just some flat stones. A fake hollow log. A skull and a smaller skull.
He likes to go inside the smaller skull and sleep yesterday I might have seen him struggle a bit to get out but I didn't notice because I thought he just didn't want to get out and got pissed when I moved it. I'll send pics soon
It may be those skulls... Take each one out and take a picture of the entry points and the inside of it when you can...

Found out what it was, he may have got stuck to the intake of the tank, i found him stuck to it again so he’s now inside of a fry cage in the tank close to the surface so he can’t go near the intake again untill he heals, I’m putting him in a new beta tank tomorrow with pre cycled water from my old tank, with new ornaments.
a friend of mine pointed out she had a beta in the same style tank and the intake was so strong it sucked him against it.

Bettas, especially males, should not be kept with other fish. I’m not an expert on loaches, but from what I’ve read on here they can be aggressive, especially if the betta and the loach got into a fight.

Thank you for the tag :)
You're sorta right, some loaches can be pretty aggressive when they have a mind too (when kept in the wrong numbers usually, or other unsuitable conditions), but those are the botid species of loaches you've seen us talking about. Clown loaches, yoyos, ones like that :) And even then, they're usually pretty peaceful, just have a hierarchy in their social groups, so they can scrap and dominate each other, stress each other out if not kept properly in groups of five or more.

Kuhli loaches however are very peaceful, none aggressive fish though :)

He was perfectly great yesterday, I think I have videos of him in his hide looking completely normal. My friend said the same thing. She has no idea what this could be. She helped set my tank up and has been looking after beta fish for years. At one point had about 10 at once with a huge 10 tank setup, so I trust her when she said my tank way okay. This has happened within 8 hours. And he has no other symptoms of fin rot
Can you post the photos from yesterday please? The ones you sent to your friend?
Just my Beta. Got him last Wednesday, no shrimp. Havnt seen any at all. Just double checked my ammonia just in case and it's still at 0ppm

That could do it, poor thing. Transferring the water might help him in terms of keeping him in exactly the same water conditions in terms of temp etc, but remember that the water itself isn't "cycled". When we talk about the cycle, we're talking about the beneficial bacteria (BB) which process ammonia and nitrite, turning that into the much less harmful nitrAte. Then we lower the nitrAte levels through water changes.

But those BB don't live in the water column. They live in the filter media (the sponges etc inside your filter), and on the hard surfaces in your tank. On the glass, the decor, and especially the substrate - that becomes a big surface area for BB to live on. But since your set up is new, it's likely mainly the filter media holding all the BB. So while it's okay to move the water with the fish, if it's a different filter, you want to transfer your existing filter media to the new filter to retain your cycle. And keep a close eye on ammonia/nitrite/nitrate levels for a while.

Do you know what kind of filter the new tank has? You can add a pre-filter sponge to the intake of many filters. Will baffle the flow somewhat, be a softer surface if he does get pulled against it, and also acts as additional filter media.

Do you have plans for where the baby bristlenose will go? Because a 20L/5 gallon isn't big enough for a pleco, and bristlenose grow pretty fast. Keeping one in too small a tank may stunt its growth, and plecos also have a high bioload - meaning they eat and poop a LOT, making maintaining good water quality in such a small tank very hard.

Welcome to the hobby! Don't mean to sound critical, only trying to help so that you have success :)

yeah I was planning to add one of my filter sponges to the tank, my filter has twp

Yes I already know it’s a bad tank for it lol. I already have plans with a 320l for it. he is less than 4 months old and just over an inch big so tank size is not an issue for now.
I know they poop a lot lol, I had 2 in there before an ammonia spike and using ammo lock killed one of them and one of my kuhli :(. It’s all under control now though and this was well over 3 weeks ago.

Sorry, I'm not trying to talk down to you or criticise you. But we have no way of knowing what you know, you know? lol. I'm good, but I'm not yet able to read people's minds... ;) So to try to help, I'd rather give you more info than needed than less, know what I mean?

So take anything that's useful to you, and leave the rest.

I wasn’t trying to respond rude or anything? I am definitly taking the help I was just letting you know not to worry as I have a bigger tank ready for him soon

I didn't think you were! Sorry, tone doesn't come across well in text form, that's why I put smily and winky face emoji's so you'd know that it was said it a jokey, light-hearted way :)

A lot of people get a pleco and are surprised by how they're poop machines, lol. But 320L sounds great :)
I'm sorry you lost the other one though :(

Oh haha I’m sorry! I’m not really good with reading tone over text because of my Asperger’s 😂
I was well warned in advance that they can single handedly power an entire waste power station. It was a bit of a pity to loose my other. Da Vinci is still alive but him and Van Gogh were the best of friends. Never left each other’s side, there were times I got home and they were just smooshed against each other by the filters. I included a photo of this, Van Gogh is on the heater and da Vinci is on the glass.

im very excited to get the 320l set up, I’m going to have it heavily planted and get some really weird fish! I’m always drawn to the funky ones. I can’t wait to get a upside down catfish or a bichur!

Haha, no worries! I was a bit concerned then that I might have offended you, by telling you stuff you already know. :) But it's all good! We all just want the best for our fish :)

Great choice in names, by the way! Sounds very exciting, your plans for the larger tank! Just take it slow and steady. Fishkeeping is all about patience, and water quality. Takes time to get a tank cycled, and yet more time to get it fully established and stable. It's also so tempting sometimes to impulse buy fish, but we have to resist that temptation and always do our research first! Which can be hard, since there's so much misinformation out there.

Seriously Fish is a fantastic, reliable resource to find out the requirements different species of fish by the way, if you're ever wanting to look up a certain species. Written by scientists and experts in the hobby, so it means you can trust the information there in terms of the size of tank, water parameters, mixing them with other fish etc. Really useful site.

Oh cool thank you so much!
Sad to inform grim passed... I'm in tears. Barely had him a week.
I try to do as much research as possible but the misinformation is everywhere it sucks :(

Since you're good with fish names (I'm terrible at naming!) maybe you can help me name one of my plecos? This is Ziggy - like Ziggy Stardust, because he's a Starlight pleco, and I'm a David Bowie fan. He's grown a fair amount since I took this photo! But I also have a second one. Both too young to sex so I don't know whether male or female for either of them, but I don't have a name yet for the second starlight pleco, and I've had them for a long while, so I feel guilty, lol. Need a name for her(?)

Oh man, I'm so sorry :( That was the betta? It was quite a severe thing I'm afraid.

Please don't blame yourself. It might not have been anything you did - sometimes fish are sick when they come from the store, and I haven't ruled out the possibility that he had an aggressive type of bacterial infection or something... might not have been the filter.

And even if it were, we've all made mistakes that have sadly proven fatal to one or more fish. I made a mistake by not replacing a damaged intake filter sponge quickly enough, so some of my guppy fry got sucked into the filter. I found a load of them in the canister! Most survived, but some were badly injured and didn't survive :(
Still feel guilty about that.
But a lot of things have the potential to go wrong in this hobby, and there is so much to learn when you first start. Try to take it easy on yourself, resolve to learn from any mistakes and move forward.

Don't be too quick to get a new fish, give the tank time to settle, and yourself time to really research fishkeeping. Don't trust any single source of info, even us! always check the sources, and read around a lot of different places. Seriously Fish is a good and reliable one, but there are also some good youtube channels out there, if you prefer. I listen to a lot of fishtubers while I do tank maintenance :D There are some bad ones too, but Aquarium Co Op is a good one with a lot of good info. I also really like the "Big Al's" series of videos on fishkeeping- I'll link their video on the nitrogen cycle below. It really explains things in understandable terms, and Thomas is super knowledgeable. Sadly they're not working for that channel anymore, but their old vids are still there and still good. Have a look at their channel and see what videos appeal/might be useful :)
