Betta Lifespan?

I just lost my only betta 3 weeks ago. I don't know how old he was when I got him, but I had him 4 years exactly. I just had him in about a half gallon bowl. I was very attached to him, its very sad losing him.

i was wondering the same thing as well cos one of our family friends reccomended i get angel fish not bettas cos they didnt live long when he had them :grr: im getting one today hopefully :D

I've heard 2-5, though there have been records of up to 10. However, I strongly believe that the breeding background and overall health upon purchase also affect the lifespan. I've had bettas who I bought in rough condition that'd only last a year despite excellent husbandry. ::shrugs:: Guess it depends on the fish, but yea, 3-5 average.

Don't Angelfish get massive and require a much bigger tank, more specific care, etc. than bettas? Something in the back of my mind is whispering "tricky to keep..." but I can't figure out why.

I've found that Angelfish aren't necessarily difficult to keep, but from my personal experience they do require a lot of attention. My brother had two in a 30 gallon which we only recently lost, and they'd been going for years. When we bought them they weren't much bigger than a penny, and when they died they were a good 6 inches from fin to fin. Absolutely gorgeous, and quite tame, however they can be quite twitchy.
