how long is a bettas life span

how can i tell males to females

But the normal life of a betta is two years. Now very occasionally you will see someone that has a betta that is 3 or 4 years old but those people are professional breeders.

i know plenty of people who are not professional breeders whose bettas have lived to be 3 years old. i have one friend whose betta lived to be 6, and she was not a breeder in any way, shape, or form.

not especially, when they can live to 3 or 4 years. that's like saying "oh my, that man lived to be 50 years old! " when the human lifespan can easily reach over 70 years when properly cared for.

and an average 3 years sounds kinda short to those of us who own paradise fish (6+ years), tetras (mostly 10+ years), or plecos (20+ years)! :p

did you know that the true lifespan of the simple neon tetra is at least 10 years and perhaps longer! but most of them keel over well before that time due to poor maintenance. the same is true for most fish that are presumed to live for only a little while.

and so proves the point that it's MOSTLY due to genetics and not to the owner of the fish. :fun:

i don' t think that necessarily proves anything at all. just because someone isn't a professional breeder doesn't mean they don't know how to properly care for a betta...i'd say proper care and good water quality plays a big role in life span.

Google Search: Betta lifespan

I did a Google search, and the consensus seems to be two years, three years on the outside. But I think we should distinguish between are pretty inbred betta's and those that are not inbred. I can imagine our pretty inbred fish would probably last the conservative two year estimate.

We have three fish which are 18-20 months old now....
