Betta Is Ill

No! I'm so sorry, Prairie! I was so hoping for this to be just a hick-up.

Well, nevermind the question.  Jimmy died.

Feeling quite discouraged with my first attempt at having a betta.

I am so sorry for your loss, it is always hard but as Mamashack said he may well have been ill prior to you getting him.  When you are up to it can you post a little more about how he was housed prior to you taking him home etc?  Sadly, often our poor Bettas go through a lot before they arrive in the stores, they are very hardy considering the way they are often treated when shipped. However, ammonia poisoning can occur and cause some damage that is irreversible so do not be too hard on yourself.

I have freeze dried blood worms.
In respect to these, I would generally avoid using anything that is too dry, if I did I would definitely soak them prior to use, ensuring they were fully re-hydrated.
I came across a food that my fish love and it is moist so less likely to cause them any issues hopefully, you can read about it in my profile or here.

I am glad Wildbetta was around for you as sadly my PC has been on go slow and I have not been around as much as I also have visitors staying, but would, as always trust Wildbetta.  Mamashack PM'd me but alas Jimmy had passed by the time I managed to read it and this is the first moment I have had to be on the TFF for awhile.

Keep us posted on your future plans and I hope this does not put you off getting another Betta.

Pets at Home had a series of small betta tanks.  I am guessing maybe 5 litres?  I'd say they were maybe 10 inches tall and maybe 6ish inches wide, not sure how deep.  They had gravel a rock and a tiny fake plant.  I couldn't see anything to imply a filter or heater... not sure if that is something that could have been hidden that well.

Based on what the lady said to me when I went in to either get a replacement or refund I didn't have much confidence and took the refund.  For starters.. she couldn't find the bettas... there weren't any in the little tanks and she was sure they were randomly in other tanks.  Then she shrugged and said well they got more on Wednesday and I could come back then to get one.  I decided that was a lousy policy and got my money back.

SO... I am thinking it is quite possible my fish arrived on a Wednesday and I bought him on a Friday... no way to know how long he had been in that tank first.

I will read your link.  Frozen blood worm had previously made my guppies very sick so I have never bought them again, hence buying the freeze dried.  I will soak them for sure if I use them again.

Sorry for your loss. Dont lose hope though! It is through experience you learn to be a better fishkeeper! I had far worse situations than you. Dont worry I think he is in fish heaven by now...

Thanks for your response.  Were the tanks at PAH like a Betta Barracks?  If so, the heater is housed in the base of the barracks, with the water constantly being cycled through the filter also in the base I believe.

I think you were right to get a refund, they do not sound very switched on there.  If your fish arrived Wednesday and you bought him Friday, that is a very short period for any quarantining or treatments.

Can you PM me more info on your location, and I will take a look at what is in your area for you, or are you aware of other fish stores?

The frozen blood worm you had used that made your Guppies sick may have been an odd batch.  Maybe try another brand, but I can understand your concerns.  Live White Mosquito Larvae is my Bettas favourite.

Once again, sorry for your loss.  What are your plans now?

Could have been betta barracks, the tanks were small and placed together like that picture.

I forgot to say... I plan to find someone closer who breeds and sells them.
