Betta in need of help

But why wouldn’t betta boy fight with this handsome guy?

Thank you. There are so many conflicting threads on how to keep fish. I have been a fish hobbiest for 15 years so I do have extensive knowledge regarding Cichlids but alas not Bettas. I did buy a heater and its set to 78 F I've also put black backing on back and one side of tank it seems to be helping

Oh yes, if you'll surf the internet, you'll find a lot of different replies on your question. Most of it are own experiences of people. Even specific sites where general info is offered on fish, the water temperatures are mostly a bit higher than the necessary temperature. This is because most fish are labeled as being tropical. This means that also a lot of subtropical fish are labeled as being tropical. But most fish in the aquarium scene at an average household are fancy species or at least aquarium bred fish. These are kept at higher rates than necessary. For that does profit the growth pace of those fish. Most fish we buy at an average lfs are very young fish but already have the size of almost an adult. A higher growth speed is essential in the commercial world. It also means that most of them will have a shorter lifespan because they had to grow faster in a shorter time lap.

They don't always fight when a male sees another male or his own reflection. He can also try to impress the other male or his own reflection. Or he's one of the more lazier males that just don't care about the other one. Happens as well with certain males.

I have a question since aquiring my betta he appears to have lightened in colour is this normal. It's been almost 2 weeks since he arrived. Attaching pic before and now.

Yes bettas change their colours it's normal.

That's normal. It's a mood thing. This goes for most fish. So, no worries about that...
