Is 30% of the water changed twice a week good enough or should I change more? Feeding him 4 times a week with flakes, and ocassionally brine shrimp/bloodworms. Any advice much appreciated. ;)

Hi
When I had my bettas in 1 gal tanks, I did 100% changes once a week. And suctioned out uneaten food after a feeding. I don't know about partial changes, though. As long as you have an ammonia tester, it might be ok. Test for ammonia every to every other day at first. When the amount of ammonia is readable on the test, it's time to change the water. But if you only do partial changes, you might want to test the water again after. If there are still detectable amounts of ammonia, you may need to change more water.
HTH!!

Thanks for that piece of info. :) Anyone else have anything to add?

I have most of my bettas in 1.5g bowls and I do 100% water changes once a week and do 2 50% water changes twice a week and I try and get all the visible poop out. I can't find a baster here yet (guess I gotta go to good ole' walmart) so in times of need I've used a straw or a spoon. Example

Sunday 100%
Wednesday 50%
Friday 50%
Sunday 100%

I just want my fishies to be in as clean as possible water.

Oh yeah and if you have gravel in there, don't do what I did and rinse the gravel off with tap water, you kill the good bacteria that forms. Just give your gravel a swish and a swoosh with the same water you're going to throw out (when you do 100%) and that's it. :D HTH

everyone does it a little differant, i do one 50% water chnag every other day userally unless hes looking a bit under the wether. for chems i juts use a half tsp of salt, a third tsp of conditioner, and since hes currently batteling fin rot i put like 5-7 drops of melafix in there every other water change, this is for a 1g. good luck

I do an equivalent of 1 gallon-per-week change. It means my 1-gallon bowls get changed 100% once a week, my 1/2 gallon bowls get changed 100% twice a week.

You guys are hardcore  My 1 gals are mostly bare and I baster everyday and then they get 25% one day a week and then everyone gets 50% on Sundays

Bare bottoms are easiery! I have Enyo in a 2 gallon kritter keeper with NO gravel and just one little floating plant (sheds a lot though) and it's alot easier to see when it's time to suck up the poop! :p

Yeah, barebottoms are plain, but much easier to clean when one has many! :)

Great feedback guys! Just wondeeing because when I kept my betta in a 1 gal for 3 months, it was with 20-30% one day a week, usually after bloodworms/b.shrimp and 50% every Sunday. Now he's in my 10 gal community. :kana:

I'm sure basters make extremely good poop-suckers and they'll help reduce the ammonia level until the next water change.

It takes less time to pour all the water out, and refill the 1 gal than to siphon the bottom, and refill. 100% water change is better for a betta than a partial change. I prefer to do a 100% water change twice a week. I feed a lot of frozen foods, so the ammonia level rises faster than if I just use pellets and flake. Having several tanks to change, I get done much faster changing all the water.

I have two 2 gallon tanks and i do water changes twice a week and do about 70% and i add a little bit of aquarium salt on the process. I also use a mini syphon to vacuum the gravel to get the uneated food and poop....
