I've had my betta for just over a week now. I had it in with two Dalmation Mollies who have now died. I presumed they had velvet as they had gold spots on them, I treated with Interpid velvet meds (still in the tank) as they only died yesterday)

The Betta has no glod spots at all or any form of yellow sheen to it. However there does seem to be a small white patch of something on both of its front fins at its gills. I just took a look at it just now and it seems its nose and eyes are red (I'm guessing from the diggin in the sand) this seems to have come on all of a sudden as it looked fine on Friday.

Could the Velvet meds be affecting it or possibly someother disese or parasite? Itch maybe?

Any help is greatly received.

Would be helpful for the guys and gals to know what medication you used? the brand name :)

Ah yea, it was Interpet Number 7 (Anti-slime and Velvet)

The tank has only had the fish in for 8 days, before then I did a fishless cycle for over 2 months and was ready for 2 weeks before adding the fish. It is a juwel Rekord 70 tank.

The fish were bought from Pets at Home and came from the same tank in the shop (both the Mollies and betta

I have just done about a 70% to 80% water change.

Fish last Tuesday I think...

I'm pretty sure that the Velvet Med isn't doing any good (it has been in since Friday lunchtime) so I'm really not sure what to do now, or what to treat for. I can't really do anything now untill tomorrow morning as the lfs is closed today.

Oh live plants were added on Wednesday, they came from Plantsalive.co.uk. Not sure what they are though, I ordered the 18" collection, but the package had a note saying not everything was in stock so they added plants to make up the original price. However before adding to hte tank they were thouroly rinsed in cold tap water for a good few mins each.

Just took a cuple of mins of video footage and uploading it the now, looking at him now though for 5mins he looks slightly calmer just rubbing on the tank itself and not diving into the sand. The end of his big tail/top fin is looking a bit white/see through though. should be able to see it on the video though when its done, might not be up till tomorrow though its like 265meg.

Um I think the betta just had/done this.....

Well hes still alive today so at least thats something. Any ideas people? I'm going to get some carbon today to put in the tank, at least that will take care of the Velvet Meds. How long will it take to clear?

Water test today is normal

I can't advise on the meds, but doesn't it sound like they may be helping? I know with Ich it can take 2-3 weeks to get rid of it (I had that experience). What I do want to say is when you are ready to remove the meds, to a very large water change 80% if you can. Then clean water and the carbon filter should clear the water in 3 days.

What a handsome chap he is - and a lovely tank for him too. Could be that he's just excited at having the whole tank to himself but he does seem rather active, darting back and forth quickly, like something is agitating or stressing him.

That little blob on the sand looks like a betta poop so nothing to worry about. At least you know he's not constipated.

As I've just mentioned to another member on another post, check that your filter flow isn't too fast and noisy for him.

I could just about make out that little white patch you mentioned near his gills - not clear enough for me to say exactly what it could be. If it's raised and looks like a raspberry/cauliflower appearance then it's Lymphocystis. Or it could be the start of body rot.

Regards

Athena

nothing looks out of the ordinary from the photos. i agree he left you a poo present-always good to know the bettas are pooing as they are prone to constipation.
the areas in the pic behind his gills that look white seem to be the base of his pectoral fins reflecting the light differently due to the angle. nothing to sorry about. he also is paler in the "chin" area but that is normal (more greyish.silvery coloration than blue).
he really is handsome!
how is he doing now?
cheers

Looks fine. Maybe his eyes are redder but bettas often have red eyes. He is active - maybe a teeny bit agitated but swimming around the tank like that is normal for a healthy, active, feisty betta. The lump looks like poo and it's a good colour for poo so all healthy there.
