Hi there, I keep 9 tropical fish tanks. My passion is Bettas. I have 12 Betta's 10 male two female. They are my pride and joy! Recently my metallic black crowntail Betta has started to float at the top of his tank and suddenly stopped eating. He used to have a big appetite and I am now worried sick. Im wondering if this is Hexamita? I have noticed some stringy white faeces. Treatments in the UK are limited - I am treating with waterlife Octozin ( Dimetridazole). I have spent the last two days scaling the internet for help or advice but apart from Octozin there seems no treatment available. I used this successfully with my German Blue Rams a few weeks ago Please, if any one has any advice on treating or possible other diagnosis please let me know - I desparately do not wont to lose him. The tanks is kept imaculate, no Nitrite, Ammonia or Nitrates. I cannot think of anything else this might be as he is in great condition externally.

When things have settled I will post some pictures of all my beautiful bettas.

Thank you

welcome to the forums! my bettas used to float at times and some goldfish. what i did was take a frozen pea, put it in water and put it in the microwave for like 30 seconds. then i cut it up and feed it to them. it 'cleans' out their system and they should stop floating.

good luck :good:

In a properly cycled tank you should be showing some nitrates.
What size tank is he in?
I'd do a largish water change & try feeding a deshelled pea.
Also what filter do you have in the tank?
One of mine hated the flow & used to hang at the top of the tank until I changed filters

Welcome :)

White stringy poop is usually signs of an internal problem

I lost him today - I am absoultely heartbroken. Its a 20 litre tank, fully cycled all of his own with two small filters (i put two in each tank) It was an Aquaflow and a carbon one with a sprayer for air. No nitrites, no measureable nitrates, no ammonnia whatsoever.

I have ordered some metronidazole from abroad as am never taking this chance again. Apart from octozin there is nothing on the market here. Its costing a bit but if i ever see white stringy faeces signs again in any of my bettas i will treat immediately.

He was fed on Sera Bettagran and a few blood worm... as are all my bettas.
Thanks for the welcome and sorry its been in such sad circumstances.

I keep 12 Bettas, German Blue Rams, A community of everything and Pleco's Royals, Bristlenose, Clown and Ancisterous. I have kept fish all my life from a child
