My betta has a large bulge in his body forming on his left side. Is it dangerous? I do not see any scale problems, and he appears overall normal (still eats and swims) other than this growth. I will attempt to get pics later.

A pic would be helpful, even a poor one. From the description sounds like swimbladder issue. Skip a day or 2 of feeding and see if that helps. Sb usually clears on its own and is caused by numerous things.
cheers

just an update in the hopes of some help. the bulge has gotten bigger despite my attempts to help him. He has been in a 2.5 gal quarantine tank for some time. I have run a little salt through the tank to help balance the water, and some melafix in the hopes that would help. The bulge is now large enough to negatively impact his swimming ability, as he now stays underneath wood all the time. The fact that he is under the wood makes me think the bulge is a large air bubble trapped in his body. When he is not under wood he does appear to struggle to stay down. The bubble is so large that the skin has been stretched to a point where i can see into the body cavity. All this being said he still tries to eat.

any help or thoughts on what to do would be great.

I have a female that suffers from the same problem. She has had it for quite some time now. I sometimes stop her feeds and it goes down a bit but she lives in a tank with other fish therefore scoffs up all the food. So the whole lot have to go on a diet because of her. I don't know if you can treat it with medication because it could be a number of things. Like Lorachick said it could be swim bladder problems or it may be the start of Lymphocystis. Maybe a bit of epsom salt in the water could help.

sorry if this sounds completely off ( i am sure someone will correct me). If this is a swimbladder issue, dont feed him for 2 days
if this could be a constipation issue, try feeding him a de shelled cooked pea, after one full day with no food...peas usually get rid of constipation pretty quickly....if my anatomy stinks I am sorry
he is displaying stress stripes, so I am not sure if there is an internal parasite issue...you may have to treat him with a internal parasite meds...i think you should post in the emergency health section for some help, as bettas take turns for the worst pretty quickly....hope he is ok xx
