will male betta and male thick lipped goourami get on ok in community tank lfs said betta and gouramis will be fine together .

Your lfs is wrong :D

Thick lipped have longer fins and bright colors and the betta will want to fight with him. Anything that looks like a betta, i.e another betta, guppies, gourami, some long finned tetras, will all become targets. Mine picked on all of my gourami and their fins weren't as long as thick lipped gourami are.

hi thanks for reply i dont no what to do now i have had them in tank since friday seem ok just ignore each other the gourami is a lot larger then the betta i dont think the thick lipped gourami has long fins or is very bright in colour thanks for your advice anyway i do have another tank which im cycling at the moment i will move betta into this tank wont be ready for about 4 weeks so i hope they will be ok until then.

ok thanks for reply they seem ok at the moment maidenhead aquatics said they will be fine together as both fish came from there the betta seems quite a peacful fella as i said i do have another tank put isnt cycled yet so i didnt want to put him in there yet . i have brought him a 8 gallon hex tank if i see any aggresion i will move him.

I dont know if that will be good for the betta.. Every betta i have put with a gourami (even peaceful dwarfs) has started a fight with a gourami and lost. My gouramis got attacked and (i guess) in defense attacked the betta resulting in its death.

what would be best to do i can put betta in uncycled tank and do lots of water changes as i wont be able to get to lfs until fri. or just leave them be.

I would srt up another tank and let it start cycling but leave the fish where they are until you see any aggression. then move the betta. If there is no aggression i would still leave another tank set up just in case..

IMO it just depends on the individual fish, the size and setup of tank, and luck. I have 45 gal tank with 3 opaline gouramis, 3 long finned black skirt tetras, 5 rasporas, 1 male betta, 4 small rainbows(soon to be moved), and a pleco. I have had no problems with the fish fighting or any agression.

I've three gourami in a comunity tank (opaline, three spot and blue) have always had a male betta too. Even with other tank mates ie guppies, dannios, mollies, green barbs, swordtails and yoyo the only agression that I've seen is from yoyo to the largest of the barbs. Only at feeding time and I must say that the barb deserves it... The Betta does flare at any large shape that appears in his upper corner (his choice hang out) but the all just look at him like "yeah, what of it?". I'd just watch and see if you have a problem - after two years (and three different male bettas) I've never had a problem. The three different males were not due to deaths - just who's turn it is in the BIG HOUSE.
