I decided to move my betta from the community tank into is own little tank. I picked up a 1 gallon hex tank kit. It has an undergravel filter and I added a few live plants. My question is about lighting, how much does a betta need? Is the ambient room light enough? He will be sitting on my computer desk and its fairly bright. I've never kept a betta in a small container before and I am somewhat worried about about making him sick.

He won't mind not having a light. He should be very happy in his own little tank, Bettas seem to like being on their own. :)

I just put him into his new home, so far he seems ok with it. I need to get an air valve so I can resuce the water current some. I think on next payday I'm going to get one of those 2 gallon tanks that have a little box filter and light. I'd fel alot better with him in a better/bigger tank. I'll have to get some pictures up. Thanks for the advice

Is the tank you have the betta in now a aquaview 1 gallon tank if so I have one of those and it came with a undergravel filter and a hood and light but I don't use the undergravel filter because I feel all it does is still the poop up in the tank. So if it is what I have then just use the light that came with it.

not aquaview, its a mini hex kit by Tom. I'm thinking about turning the undergravel filter off, the current is really strong and it pushes my fish around too much. All he does is sit at the bottom hiding behind the plant, I though he might be less skittish by himself. Maybe I should have left him in the main tank, at least I could see him then.

I went ahead and turned the filter off. Mr.Betta has a whole new attitude now, swimming around and eating. Now I just need to come up with a name, he is white with a little gray on his gill covers.
