Betta genetics

I have a spawn of fry that are around 4 months old now. Many of the male fry have recently begun developing extra rays. The parents are ordinary, single ray crowntails - where are the double ray crowntails coming from? (Not that I'm complaining, they're pretty spectacular) Is it possible to get throwbacks of these traits? Does anyone know of any good links to betta genetics. I've found a few but they're more to do with basic traits.

4 months is usually full grown so calling them fry is a bit misleading

Well it worked to your advantage A single rayed ct is usually in fact a combtail,so now you have real crownies

Well said Wuv....The combtail comes from breeding a CT to a Delta tail-HM...If both parents are combtails, then they both carry the Crown Tail gene. Thats why you got some CT's.

Actually wuv I had a Single Ray CT but it dindt look like a combtail.....

Snowy, I was the owner. Now my wife owns him... She named him King, and he is in her vase by her community tank. He was the father to the first spawn I had.

Yeah I guess they're far too big to be called fry anymore ) . Unfortunately I only recently got a digital camera, so have no idea how to take decent photos let alone post them on here Thanks wuv and f250fisherman, I was a bit confused about the difference between the combtail and crowntail types so now I know. BTW what type is the one in your picture, f250fisherman- he's nearly identical to the father of my spawn. Is he a combtail? If so then it all makes sense.

I just realised how confusing my first post was. I meant to say double the rays, as in twice as many as the usual. Instead of each ray branching into two at the ends, these guys have 4 points at each "crown". (Maybe this is actually more confusing ) The rays aren't of even length though. The middle two of the four are slightly longer than the outer two.

The one in my pic is a crown tail. A combtail has single rays on the end, like a comb. The pic that Joker posted is a very nice combtail. Most comb tails have a shorter ray. The delta tail is more dominant than a crown tail, so it holds the ray from splitting after the webbing stops. My opinion is Jokers fish has a stronger crowntail gene in that fish, but the delta tail gene is keeping the ray from splitting.
