hi, is it true that a betta can have hundreds of fry???

If this is true then when they get older and you need to seperate them where are you going to put the hundreds of jars??? ill need about 50 tanks!!!!!

Yep, lots of fry :) You only need to jar the males when they're old enough, the females can stay in the growout tank. Until you get rid of them.

i think ill sort out me swordtail and molly fry out and then ill get a couple of bettas and breed them. might be along time though because im expecting some guppy fry anytime now!!!

Please, before you breed Bettas do LOTS of research including the pinned topic in this section. Make sure you have the tanks for all the males and space to put them. And be sure you are ready to do daily water changes on ALL those male tanks as well as the growout tanks. Be ready to feed the fry several times a day with live food such as BBS, Microworms, Vinegar eels (have your cultures ready). Be sure you know where all the young will go when they are old enough (who's going to take/buy them from you, you only have so many friends who want a fish, Lol).

There is alot to prepare for when breeding Bettas, they aren't as simple or easy as guppies, mollys or swordtails.

i have read the pinned topic on this forum. whilst i am waiting for the other fish to grow up i will lookat getting another tank!!! when they get older i am sure my lfs will take them. Or i could put them on aquabid couldnt i ??/ :fun:

Thanks for the replys!!!

The only thing I'd say is- what tail types are they? Theres no point trying to sell VTs- they are so common no one will want them unless they are high quality and even then its doubtful. You'd be better off buying a nice pair of CTs off Aquabid or something- costs more but worth it in the long run,.

As far as Aquabid...keep in mind there is alot of competition there (look at all the auctions that never have a bid), so if you don't have very nice quality fish, it's unlikely anyone would bid. And keep in mind, selling fish on AB and then having to ship them isn't easy either, you need a good supply of insulated boxes, heat packs, packaging them up and driving to the PO or UPS or Fed Ex...and then there is dealing with dead arrivals or just plain unsatisfied customers...are you willing to refund money if the fish arrives sick or dead? How about the shipping?

I'm just playing the devil's advocate here and pointing out things that most people don't think about until the time comes then they realize it's just not worth the effort.

If you do decide to breed, definetly get good stock (not veiltails, as you'll never be able to sell them on AB), Crowntails or Super Delta/Half Moons. Don't try to reinvent the wheel by starting with low quality fish thinking you'll eventually improve the stock thrrough breeding...that takes years of breeding and alot of work picking out the best fish, when you can just go on AB or to a Betta club or local breeder and get good quality stock already.
