I believe there's pros and cons about breeding pet store bettas for the first time before investing in a better pair. The store bought bettas can be used to practice breeding before you go full on. The only problem is they are harder to home. Breeding fancy bettas the first time may not go so well and you might possible loss the pair. Research is key, but hands experience is the best learning experience.

Last year I bought an HM breeding pair (avatar) and the male had ripped part of his tail off which developed into fin rot. After months of treatments that were failures he finally started to get better. Then my female took a turn to the worst and I lost her. :-( This year I'm going to breed my green lace SD to an HM female that I'm getting from a breeder. If the spawn is successful I would love to buy a nice HMPK pair.
