Hey.

Asking for someone.

What do bettas eat? The LFS said they just take flake food but im sure someone mentioned frozen food, but cant remember the specific type. Also pellet food, but what type?

In a rush so no time to search, hopefully someone can tell me

Thanks

bloodworm in vitamin jelly, frozen blood worms and different sorts of frozen stuff, betta pellets :good:

Thank you.

I saved one, got one today myself. They were being kept in tiny compartments side by side, most the bettas were lying on the ground. I picked the nicest and most liveliest. I do however have a filter in my tank, i have it in the corner and i have the ouput facing against the side to prevent a strong current. Will it be okay? The betta was next to the intake and his/her fins didnt get pulled in so i guess thats a good thing!

How do you know if its male or female?

Either way it seems rather enquisitive, much more livelier. Been in the tank about 20 minutes now and it seems as if its fins are showing more? How do you find out whether its male or female?

ATM he keeps chompin on bits of plant and spitting it out, do you think its hungry? We dont have any pellet or frozen bloodworms atm, reason i didnt get any was because i wasnt sure what to get and the bloke said flakes will be okay. We have some King British flake food and frozen daphnia. Will it eat any of that?

more than likely, fishie is a "he" ... and on occasion (if needed) mine will eat flake food, they just don't like it as much. break up a flake into smaller pieces, and see if he'll eat it.

i feed my bettas frozen brine shrimp and they go crazy for it!!! :fun:

Will do! He seems to be hiding near the filter. Do they need places to hide? Or are they okay in the open? The bit of bogwood i bought as a place for fish to hide isnt ready yet you see.

Also the temperature of the tank is 27oC. He is kinda blue and purple with signs of white in his rear fin, and has a brown head, and a tad bit of red in his front lower fins. Im guessing their heads are usually a different colour (looking at your picture liz2).

Very hard getting a picture of him :shout:

my betta is picky. he doesn't like betta pellets, he refuses to eat them. he prefers flakes and gets freeze dried bloodworms a few times a week which he really loves.

they do like places to hide, either plants or pots are a good idea. it'll help him feel less stressed and safe to have somewhere to hide and also to rest on.

Well hes kinda been all over the tank. Hes currently resting on the bottom of my tank, i have black fine gravel, will this be okay for him? He has been near the top sometimes, mid tank and bottom. Seems to like swimming near the bogwood and through the gaps. I plan to get some corys so will be putting some sand in some places of the tank.

Also, now and then for no reason, he'l just dart away like a bat out of hell, then back to floating/swimming. Why could he be doing this? My water is fine because i just changed it and has been treated. The first time he did it he swam right into the bit of bogwood the silly sod.

Oh, fed some flake food, crushed it up but doesnt seem to be eating it. Not sure if its because hes not hungry or doesnt like it. Oh scratch that hes just had a bit lol as i speak!

I would get some pellets... very smell ones.
I use Hikari Gold baby pellets and my bettas gobble them up like there is no tomorrow.
Your betta might not be used to eating something like it though so it may take a few trys to get him to eat it up or he could turn out to be a picky eater and not like them at all :)
Also 2 of my bettas enjoy eating freeze dried bloodworm. My other one doesn't like them though. I only give these as a treat every once in a while though.

Just remember not to overfeed him. It's also a good idea to fast him for a day and to give him a cooked (make sure it's not hot though lol) shelled pea once a week.

Hes a bit nervous, banged the desk slightly by accident and he started darting around. Also put hand near the tank and he went ape!

he will be like that for a while until he settles in. big bumps and stuff will probably always scare him though

Congratulations on your new betta... I'm sure he's a boy b/c most LFS's sell boys. Boys are generally more colourful and have longer fins. The girls are a little less colourful and their fins are shorter.

Frozen bloodworms are usually tops on most bettas' menus. You just have to cut a piece off and thaw it in some of his tank water. I feed them one at a time so as not to foul the water with a pair of never-used tweezers - not too many - it's easy to overfeed when they gobble these up.

My Max didn't like pellets at first but it was recommended in another forum to try the Hikari brand Baby Cichlid pellets. They're tiny and easier for them to eat.

Max was fed flakes at the store... I don't like them b/c some float to the bottom and it's hard to suck out what he doesn't eat. He wasn't all that fussy for them either, thankfully.

I have been warned to stay away from the freeze-dried products b/c it tends to constipate them.

My Max didn't really eat for the first few days... I think from the stress of being purchased and put into a new tank... it takes them a few days to settle in. Just keep trying... but make sure not to leave any uneaten food in the tank... the water will foul quickly. Good luck!
