Hi

I've 2 female betta who have been very swollen for a few months now. I first thought it was just bellys full of food but I don't think so now. I've had them a couple of years and they've never been this fat.

Does anyone know what it could be? Is it possible that they are full of eggs and as there's no male about the eggs just get stuck in there?

Yes be careful on the food you feed them. I only notice females getting fat when there is a male present to stimulate them into breeding mode, mind you I could be wrong. But my concern is you may be overfeeding them and there is a danger that it may be the signs of dropsy.

with it being just the one side thats fat, i'd say its not eggy or over fed, both sides would be fat, could it be a lump?

From the pic looks like swimbladder is "swollen". Id cut back on feeding for a week or so (feed every two days and try a pea with fast day). Will probably clear on its own. Does she have a difficult time maintaining balance while she swims? Is her belly also swollen? I absolutely do not think it is dropsy or a tumor. a "side view" might also be helpful, but honestly, just looks like swimbladder is "full" (for lack of better terminology so early in the morn lol)
keep us posted
cheers

Thanks. Will try to get a side photo but I'm having problems getting a decent one with my Camera.

Her belly is swollen but she swims fine. I am feeding her 'normal' every tropical fish flake & she has a go at the bottom feeder tablets to. Should I change her diet?

FYI - Both my Bettas had this problem, but one of them as died since. :(

Best I could do. Could it just be over-feeding. I think maybe she is nicking the pellets I put in there for the loaches.

It may be just over-feeding ? Try cutting back the amount you feed her for the next week or so see if theres any change.

very possible my girls steal my Cories pellets, they do look quite fat straight after but it soon goes down

Thanks, I have put her in a breeding trap now and will only feed her a few flakes a day and see what happens.

The reason why I thought it wouldn't be overfeeding though is because the bump is only on 1 side. A fishes stomach isn't to 1 side, is it?

Too much food can cause swimbladder problems and that is why its on one side and not just her belly (which is rather fat too). Cutting back feeding as mentioned should sort it out.
Cheers
