Hi,

I have a male Betta and I've had him for about 10 months. When I first got him he made bubble nests all the time but lately like the past 2-3 months he hasn't made any. I recently (yesterday) moved him from a little little tank to a bigger bowl thats about 1.5 gallons. In the bowl he has some plastic plants as well as some live plants. I also put my african dwarf frog in there with him and they get a long great. He seems happy and healthy.

I feed him Betta flakes sometimes but mostly I feed him frozen bloodworms. He's very active always jumps towards my finger when I put the food in. I don't have a heater in the bowl and I am wondering maybe if he's too cold? I am planning on getting a small lamp real soon (this week) that I can position over the bowl so it gets warm.

Thanks

It could also be that he is just old. Some of my older bettas stopped bubblenesting when they got on in years.

Assuming you have a veiltail (the typical lfs betta), he was probably a year or more old when you got him. I would guess he's around 2 years old already, seeing as you've had him for 10 months.

maybe hes not happy for some reason..

or maybe hes sick..

too much bloodworms can be a bad thing

Yeah I was thinking he was getting old as well....Because it isn't that he's not happy...he's active and always goes crazy for food...or when I'm around. He has had a couple illnesses in the past...pop eye but treated that and it went away.

I probably feed him Betta flakes 3 times a week or so...sometimes I mix...like a few flakes and a little bloodworm...it's a bit hard for him not to get any bloodworms at all because I have my african dwarf frog in there who has to eat bloodworms so the Betta always manages to steal some.

I did the mirror thing just now and he really picked up....I know Bettas love to fight but I guess I was always under the impression that putting a mirror up to them is cruel? Maybe thats just a myth though...should I do it on a regular basis? If its good for him and he enjoys it I guess I dont see anything wrong with it.

Yeah he's just a regular veiltail Betta. Not even sure where I could find the fancier kind here in Sweden...would love to get some though if I could.

I thought if you put a female in with a male Betta he would tear her apart??

I just think he's getting on in age...he was already full grown when I got him..so who knows how old he is exactly. He's a good little guy though

Thanks!! :flex:

you could put a female in a tank beside him.. but i wouldnt recommend putting them together.. he would probably rip her up

yeah thats what I thought....

I noticed when I put the mirror up that his gills and a patch in front of his gills is red..is that normal??

His coloring is like blue/aqua and he has maroon color on his tail too.

yeah actually he looks pretty close to the betta you got on your picture there...and I noticed a little red on him too...so I guess its how they look.

my bettas only make bubblenests right after i change their water. they used to make them all the time, new water or not, but now they don't. i wouldn't worry about it, if you say yours is still healthy and eating.
