Hello! I'm a newbie. I am learning and correcting my problems but I have a question completely different than my water in my 10 gal tank. I've also got a 5 gal tank with one dwarf frog in it. The water tests fine. This particular tank has been up for about 2 weeks. I would like to put a male betta in there. Will he be ok with the frog or the frog with him? I also plan on getting one of those caves for him. Any suggestions before I go buy my fish.

I really appreciate the help! Fish keeping is addictive. When I told my husband about wanting the betta, he asked how far I was gonna go....I think till I have fish in every room of the house and my office. Then I can start working on my mom's, my friends, etc....

THANKS, all!!!! B)

Is it and african dwarf frog? If so, the tend to do okay with male bettas, although you always have to be cautious. Make sure you monitor your male betta'a behavior with the frog. He'll probably just flare and then leave him alone after awhile. If he starts attacking it, I'd just buy the male betta his separate 2 gallon tank. Is the tank filtered at all?

Yes, it's an african dwarf frog. The tank is filtered. And I'll keep that in mind! Thanks!

Is the flow of the filter fast? Bettas do not like much current in their water and can actually get health problems sometimes from it. Can you adjust the filter flow? If not, I'd try it out with your betta, make sure you have a spot where he can get away from the current as well.

Is that tank cycled?
It sounds like not, because you've only had it 2 weeks.

Do you test your water?
I would be leary of putting a betta in there, just because my only betta casualty to date has been when I put one from a 2.5G tank into a 5G filtered tank. He was so stressed out by it that he ended up getting really sick and died.

And if the tank isn't cycled yet, I'd hold off on getting the betta until it's done. The frog should help you get the cycling done - but you'll have to make sure to keep an eye on him, too because the ammonia can burn him just like it can fish.

I don't think the tank is cycled yet either which is why I was asking. I do test it and nitrates and nitrites were zero until yesterday. THey weren't at unsafe levels but creeping up. The filter is a very small filter and I don't think you can adjust the flow. It doesn't disturb the water too much. I plan on doing a water change today. And how long does it take for a tank to cycle anyway? Also how do I know a tank is cycled? Thanks! :*)

Most of my Bettas have been fine with my frogs. All of my females have, and most of the males. A few of the males have gotten nippy with the frogs, at their legs and such. I've always pulled them at the first sign of nippiness, so I can't tell you if they stopped on their own or not. The frogs might take a nip at the Betta's fins, because their eyesight is poor, and they may mistake the fins as a foodsource, but that only happens once or twice, and none of my frogs have ever taken so much as a little chunk out of Betta fins.

Hope that helps. :)

I have two ADF's in with one of my bettas and they get along so well I am planning to get one for my other betta's tank.
