When I was doing the water change today, Opal decided to duck under the cup at the last minute instead of swimming into it and bumped his chin on the rocks. It looks like he has lost a few scales from his chin as there is a little white line instead of black like the rest of his face. I have put a bit of salt in his water. He ate his dinner fine and is swimming okay. Is there anything else I should do??
I don't have Melafix or anything like that - just some 'cure all' type stuff for my bigger tanks. When I went up to the city last week the lfs I got him from did have Melafix but I'm not sure if I will be able to get up there again this week to get some. They had no Betta specific medicine though. Any suggestions??
Thank you in advance :)

I'd say he'll probably be fine :)
Just watch the spot and make sure it starts to heal.

I have completely sworn off MelaFix - it almost killed 2 of my boys so I threw mine out. My lfs told me to just get BettaFix - it is the exact same thing, but diluted down so it's safe for use with bettas. IF you do get MelaFix, make sure you know that when you use it, use it in 1/5 the strength.

The salt was a good idea. He'll probably be fine, especially since he's eating. But keep an eye on him. If it gets infected, you can worry then. But don't worry yet. He sounds fine.

Thank you for the info :) They didn't have any Bettafix when I was looking at the shelves, I only saw the Melafix. I had ask the lfs guy about the Blackwater Extract when I was there as I have read about it on here but he had never heard of it, didn't stock it and didn't know where to get it - based on this he dismissed it as being a con that didn't actually work - this is the same guy that when he showed me all these little tiny tanks and I said I wanted something a bit bigger said the fish come from puddles and don't want a bigger tank :sly: The same guy who, when I menitoned the fish with a hole in his side, said he'd put some drops in his water and then walked off to serve another customer and ignored me and the fish

Anyway, Opal ate his breakfast this morning and was begging for more - which he didn't get :) He still looks fine but I'll keep a close eye on him. When I do the 50% water change today do I add salt to the fresh water I'm putting in or will I leave the salt out until I do another 100% tomorrow :(
