Betta Breeders

Hi, Ally55.
Hasn't LauraFrog been on lately?
Hope she's OK - she breeds bettas and is in Australia.
Very knowledgeable and helpful - REALLY nice person.
(I haven't been online much myself lately, so am not sure what's what at the moment, but hated to think you might feel deserted, having no answer and waiting for someone to acknowledge/answer your question.
Been there and it sucks.)

Thanks for answering my question.
I haven't read any posts from her lately. I only wanted to know if there were any breeders because after being on TFF for awhile and realising how untrustworthy some LFS's are, I don't know if I could buy another betta from them. I would rather buy off somebody on here. That way I know for sure things like 'how old it is', 'what type of betta', and things like that.

well i know laurafrog breeds and in auzzy

im in new zealand and the fighters are even worse (well harder to get over here and you have to pay top dollar even for an average betta)

Hi guys - and thanks sy!

At the moment I'm breeding crowntails and hopefully halfsun eventually... I'm still planning a spawn at the moment because I can't get my hands on microworm, and it would be kind of dumb to have three hundred wrigglers and nothing to feed them... it's driving me up the wall trying to get stuff.

My first planned spawn is a red/blue pair but I have a metallic green pair ready to breed as well. I would like to start on halfsuns but the LFS is practically begging for CT females so I decided to spawn those first because it's a good way to get some *capital* up for my next spawn.

So probably about four months before I've got any available unfortunately.

Jodi-Lea Matheson is usually breeding... she's in Brisbane and she will also import off Aquabid, although it is VERY expensive to import fish. her email is [email protected] and she used to have a website but it's been down for months. Najrick bettas is another place, they're located in Cairns (really close to me) - google Najrick bettas and you'll find their site. They've just moved so breeding is on hiatus unfortunately.

ha ha we can easily get micro worms atm its just not worth paying $150 for a pair of halfmoons that dont even reach a 180 spread lol

I'm not actually looking to buy any yet, but I wanted to know for the future.

Just wondering if it would be possible for you to send a betta to Adeladie? As I said I don't have space for a betta now but I would like to know.

It's certainly possible, the problem is the price... in order to ensure that the fish got there within a day or two (which is the longest they can spend in a bag safely) you would have to put them on a plane, which costs a lot. I haven't actually gotten a quote for it, because it would depend on the exact destination and the size of the box (ie how many fish were in it). It might be up to sixty-odd dollars a box or as little as 20... it's really hard to know.

60 DOLLARS!!! Wow!!! If it was that much then I don't think my parents would allow me to get one. If it was something like 20 dollars it might be possible. But I understand what you mean.

Yeah, that's one of the reasons there are very few quality betta lines in Australia and NZ... there are only three or four breeders in Australia who can regularly afford what it costs to import new lines and swap lines (I'm definitely not one of them) so most of the good lines that get established end up bottlenecking (becoming too inbred so that the fish become sickly and any flaws get magnified). It costs approximately $100 per fish (from Thailand/Singapore) to buy it, bring it into Australia legally, pay the transhippers, quarantine it and then have it sent to you. It can be up to $150 depending on where you are and how you send it. Most serious breeders would buy in trios or two pairs per strain, and breeding bettas isn't exactly cheap when you think about the water, the cost of heating all those little tanks, the food... then the breeder has to absorb the cost of fish that are not DOA (so can't be claimed on), but waste away and won't eat or breed - it does happen. So TBH there are probably only about five or six import shipments per year. It sucks. A lot.

Why can't there be a heap of betta breeders that live in South Australia? :shout:
But if there was I just know I wouldn't have any money because I would spend it all on tanks and bettas, and I would have to fight to get into my room (it would be packed full of tanks). LOL

I have dreams like that, but, darn it, I always wake up to reality, although moving around my room IS a little tricky.
I believe LauraFrog's living the dream, however...
