Betta Barracks!!

wuv, i have an answer to that question. i use beanie baby containers for my bettas, and what you can do is have the top partially on, so the water can still drip in, but bettas cant jump out. So far i have had no problems.

this is how all of the breeders round here use their barracks too.

It seems like just another time consumer to fumble with...
I just can't see where it's worth the trouble, aside from the idea of clean (er?) water dripping to your fish all the time.
Somebody wow me and make me set one up :hey: I've been wow'ed by appearance, just not the idea of it. I also shudder at the thought of re-cycled water. If I DID have a system it would have to be directly hooked up to a water line for a steady, clean drip.

So far i have had no problems.
You're using a drip system?

I touch my head..............No i haven't had one jump out and i don't use the lids. there is about an two inches from the top of the box...but i had thought about them jumping that why i was thinking about putting a filter system the full length of the barracks with the pumps so if one did jump it wouldn't be sucked into it thats why i say planning stage at the moment am thinking of a pond liner to hold the water and compartments made using corolux sheeting with holes drilled and each compartment would flow from the bottom into the next but not sure yet as this works ok...... :D maybe i have just been lucky at the moment but they do all blow nests in the boxes and when i took the pictures the cards were not in place as in between each box is some underlay that is made of Grey foam but is water resistant IE it don't soak up water and hides the bettas from each other until i take the away to let them flare at each other,....it is a great help when cleaning though as it is just cleaning as for water changes its just open a valve and the water drains away instead of being pumped to the barracks and then just top filter up with fresh clean water not so many buckets and thats another plan is own water supply this year at the moment i hook a house up to the f/house and fill a storage tank and use that......it never finished i put in another three tanks on tuesday..........only small ones ten gallon for breeding and only have artificial lighting but still get algae in the beanie boxes so in the plan for the new filter also want to incorporate some live plant as the plant in the boxes don't take enough phosphate out hence the algae and every water change adds more.......with it being filtered water it could mean if you miss a water change for some reason the fish are not living in ammonia or other harmful nasties........do i miss any   :whistle:not very often usually change 50% every week and 100% once a month as clean the holding tank that the water flows back into never clean the filter as its a trickle filter just change the last media which is filter wool..... :byebye:

Bah! You're so far away! I want to come over and look at everything  Maybe I'll see if I can go to Baker's house when I'm down in Houston next month for the show. I need to see one in person.

Your future plans sound amazing. Why oh why are they like a lifetime commitment  So addicting.

Because they are such a lovely fish to keep demanding yes but then so are kids........

i have a very small one, and i mean very small one. it just keeps the tanks fresh, no big time water changes.

You could drill holes in the beanie baby boxes, where the line that drips could come in?

What about cutting two holes on the top, so that they would overflow when the water got too high? Or why not just cut a slit between the lid and the top of the container? If you are worried about the bettas goin through the overflow, put a little mesh there.
