Both my Betta and one of my platys have a white protrusion from a swollen area. The betta is worse, he has a big swelling on his side, the scales have pine-coned, and there is a single thick white strand (looks like a flap of fish flesh) sticking out which has started to turn brown over the last 2 days (hopefully with treatment doing its stuff)

Have been treating with Myzosin (or whatever it's called - the green stuff for bacterial infections) for 4 days now, nd also had pimafix in the tank also. Then just saw one of the platys with a fresh white protrusion from a much smaller swelling. It looks like a thin single grain of rice sticking out, but doesn't look like a worm to me.

The platy isn't bothered in the slightest (could just be in the early stages of whatever it is) but the betta has been just a little less energetic than normal.

Im stumped as to what it is.

Any ideas? Haven't been able to get a decent pic so far.

No replies? Thanks everyone!

Water stats are spot on 7.2pH, ammonia = 0ppm, nitrites = 0ppm, nitrates = 5ppm.

The betta looks to be recovering - it has a hole in its blue scales, but the swelling has gone down and the thick white strand which turned brown has dropped off. He's swimming around more. The platy is the same as before, slight white swelling and the white single rice grain looking protrusion looking the same as before.

Sounds like parasites that have burst the skin but your meds cleared them up :) :good:
I had something like that in a colombian tetra before and it has recovered fine :D
