hi,i am pretty new to the forum and also know nothing about this type of fish.I was wondering if it would be suitable to keep one of these fish in a 48l tank?
In the tank already i have:4 neon tetras,1 penguin tetra and 3 male guppys.
Any advice is much appreciated :)

Fighter fish will see guppies as a threat due to their colours and long flowing fins. They really like to be the prettiest thing in the tank and will most likely kill anything it sees as competition. As for the tetras, they tend to be quite nippy fish and a betta's fins can be rather attractive to them. However, I know some people have had success keeping these fish together if the tank is large and heavily planted. Generally, bettas prefer to live alone, but that's partly what makes them so popular. They don't require a large tank to thrive, so if you can fit a 3-5 gal tank anywhere, I'm sure one will be pretty happy sitting on your desk ;)

thank you.i will have to try and find space for a new tank (small bedroom) :( .

I'm sure he'll rather be in a big tank of 48L than a 3-5gallon. Despite their water parameters needs difference, I've seen several LFS put in betta male with guppies. The fish you have are way too fast for the betta to attack anyway. I've never had a problem with neons with betta in a small 5 gallon, but I've read horror stories of neons freaking out suddenly and tore a betta's fins, even though neons are generally very peaceful fish. Not sure about the penguin tetra though. I suggest you look up penguin tetra and if it's good, try it before buying a small tank for him. Tankmates make for more entertainment for the betta.

The betta will have to wait (no space for another tank) :( .

I put my Betta into a 48l with 4 guppies and 4 platties.
So far they have been fine - no nipping or fighting etc.
It really depends on the personality of your Betta.

I have a small betta tank on my nightstand. Makes a nice addition in such a small place :)

You really are playing with fire, putting guppies and bettas together. I would bet money that eventually you will have an issue. Hope you have an extra tank if you need to separate the fish

I have no spare room for a tank due to still living at home.my mum and dad dont want a tank downstairs so i have to keep them in my room.so rather than taking a chance im just going to play it safe and stick with fish that i know should do well together :).Would have loved a betta though :( lol
