My GF got herself a beta and He was a real stunner! All red flared out pransing around the aquarium king of the castle! Now however he just sits at the bottom and it looks liek all of his beutifull fins are "twisted" they look all tucked in and he never flares out anymore and spends 99% of his time just laying on the bottom.

I checked for the usual suspects anchor worm or ich/whitespot but it doesnt seem to be that!

Amonia 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate >5
PH 6.7

Temp 26 deg celcius.

I really dunno what to do :( don't want to add meds if they will wipe out the filter and not help him >.< Will try to get pictures of him asap but any help or previous experience with such attitude/ sickness would be much apreciated >.<

how often do you change the water ?
was the tank cycled ?
do you use dechlorinator?
any tank mates?
size of tank?
fish diet?
any bloating?

a lot of meds wont wipe out the bacteria in the filter

diet = high quality flakes and 1-2 beta specific flakes with a weekly treat of frozen blood worms

Need to improve his diet with more frozen foods like brime strimp and daphnia.
Introduce some green veg into his diet.
Holes in fins if not caused by other fish can be bacterial finrot.
What does it look like when he goes to the toilet.

cook and de shell a pea and put in the tank - do this once a week to keep him regular i do it with all my fish

Woke up this morning after seperating him to an isolation tank and went to the LFS to buy some meds. On the way there my gf called me and said nvm he had passed away :'(

I went to the LFS anyhow as I needed some hampster food. When I got there I took a look at the tanks again...and allot of there tanks had dead fish in it....and the worst part... the worker there admited that all there betas had died this week or were really sick and placed in the back so no one could see them. #### GRrrrrr Never going there again! I'm going to drive the extra 20-30 mins and go to big-al's only as that place takes care of there fish like it was there own untill you buy em!

Thank you for the help all it will be much apreciated incase any future beta we get shows the same signs!

Sorry to hear you lost the little guy. I had the same problem, my sister bought me a blue vt called henry from a lfs renound for disease (she didn't know that at the time) and he died if an infection which he had when she got him, he only lasted a week. It's so sad that they let them go like this. It's nice to hear that you do know of somewhere that does look after the bettas!!!

I hate this when it happens. I got my first bettas from a shop that looks good on the outside. Went on no dead fish they all looked healthy. £5 he was, and a lovely betta at that. A week later he was dead. Went to the local shop and was told the shop that sold the betta to me has had 4 complents to them already and will be closing if they dont change their minds

i live in montréal too - what pet shop did you go to?

So sorry to hear about your little guy!!!

That is why, IMO, it is better to buy directly from the breeder even though it is more expensive due to shipping costs. Well worth it in the end, though, from my experience.

Oh no :( he was a real cutie. Nice solid colour. I spend ages looking at bettas in my shops i frequent. I stand infront of them and watch how they move, inspect their bodies and just watch them.

How are all the other fish?
