Today I drained my 75 gallon to move it to take out my full size oscar I used a coolaid container because I dont have a net big enough. Anyways he started going crazy when I was trying to catch him and ended up ripping some scales off. Well tommorrow Im bringing home a 150 gallon that hes going to be going in thats why I had to move the 75 today to make room for that. What would be the best way to catch him tommorrow because I dont want him to hurt himself again. Thanks in advance to all that reply. The easiest way would be to drain the tank completly then just pick him up but I dont have to drain it because my terrors getting moved into the 75.

I drained it today to move it now theres a open spot for the 150 so I dont have t drain it again. I'm moving whats in the 75 into the 150 and putting my green terror in the 75.A big net may work I'm jst afraid hell start going crazy and and knock off more scales

Thanks for the advise mojo and the smart *** comment bitteraspects! I think the main reason he lost some scales today was because he bashed himself against the rocks so tommorrow I'm going to take out all the decor first.

youve gotten the same response on every forum you posted this question. i think the answer is pretty self explanatory.
if youre going to get big fish (or fish that will potentially get big) you should plan to have all the proper equipment. this includes filtration, food, a proper sized home, and anything else you might need for regular upkeep. including a net large enough to move it. :good:

its not a smart *** comment. just common sense.

Most of your replys are smart *** comments and I do have all the proper things to keep and oscar I was just wondering if people did certain things to catch big fish. Even with a net if I dont get him the first time hes going to start flipping out and it will be the same out come. On the other forum I remember seeing a post a few days ago about catching big fish but I didnt read it and when I searched for it I didnt find it. I read some post were people have made traps for certain fish so I thought maybe there was something you could do for bigger fish. Also the reason I post on the other forum the same questions was for two reasons about this time of night theres not a many people on as there is on that forum that and that forum there are a lot more people who have big fish. So please next time you respond try to do it a little nicer because even if your not trying to its coming across the wrong way! :good:

Use a normal fishing net, for like real fishing. It should be fine for catching him. Other than that... an ice cream pale... catch him when he's asleep. He won't freak out as much and you won't need to chase him around.

all i said was "enough said. i didnt even respond directly to you. dont get all sensitive about it just because i agreed with someone else who told you the exact same thing. if "enough said" is not nice enough for you, the problem is in your own head, nothing i can do for you. dont turn around and make rude comments at me, then try to make it a bigger issue.
you claim that you "do have all the proper things to keep and oscar", yet you "used a coolaid container because I dont have a net big enough".
guess what?
you dont have all the proper things to keep and oscar.

a proper net is an important tool in the hobby. especially if you have larger fish that will likely freak out and jump out of your hands or "coolaid container". theres no sense putting your fish at risk of getting hurt because you didnt want to spend a few dollars on the proper tools for the job.
so i reiterate my initial statement.
get a large net. enough said.

try not to take it so personally. you asked, and you got an answer. :good:

umm, i think some people use clove oil, the same stuff you use to nicely kill your fish. you just use the right amount and it would get your oscar lethargic, then when you put him in the new tank, he would get back to normal. someone should second opinion this though. i know they do this for koi.

clove oil in trace amounts is commonly used as a fish sedative. the only downfall to this is that, as you said, this is also used in larger doses to euthanize fish.
i dont know the measurements for each, so i would not personally try it. but if youre comfortable with it, its a very common practice. i guess its just a matter of researching the doses

yeah, be super careful with it, i doubt you want to accidently kill it, maybe someone who stumbles across this thread will know how much to use.

When you dont plain on moving fish theres really no need for a net. The koolaid container is the same size as the net.Like I said before even if I had a big net and used it in that situation and I didn't get him on the first try the outcome would have been the same.Actually it would have probaly ben worse because I Would have had the handle of the net banging around making it even more diffcult. The only reason I'm moving him this time is because the wife bought me a new tank for christmas boefore that I was plainng on keeping him in the 75 for the rest of his life. The reason he got messed up was my fault I should have removed the rocks before hand because thats what he was bashing himself into. So in reality it wouldnt have mattered what I used if I failed to catch him the first time the outcome would have been the same. Tommorrow I will remove everything before hand and I'm going to get the net.

If to must of that can kill a fish I dont want to take the risk but thanks for the advise anyways. I think if I remove everything and then use the net it should be fine. With nothing in the tank for him to bash himself with I dont see why he would lose more scales. I had to put in in a 10 gallon today cause thats the only empty tank I had and you could tell he was stressed cause he layed on his side but he was fine a few mins later. I only had him in there long enough to move the tank and fill it back up.
