As long as they have been acclimated and bred in the same conditions for a few generations they will be quite hardy

Sorry, this is not true. To breed german rams in captivity you still need soft water, so they are not adapted to hard water and still need soft water. If you keep them in hard water you shorten their life span. What is true, there are week and strong individuals out there. The week ones usually originating from mass breeding with use of antibiotics.

so is there any way of telling when buying from a lfs?
would they know?
or would it be easier to find a breeder in the uk?
so glad i asked the question now :) :p

would it be best to buy a group and allow them to pair off naturally?

well RO water is always soft, And I use RO water in my biotope.

They do adapt to neutral water conditions quite fine and the point is the trusted local breeders will always have good stock in fish,

nope buying from a breeder is always better

I think you might have better rams than we have in the UK, Derp :(

I don't even keep them anymore, even though my water is perfect for them and they're my favourite fish; I just can't keep them alive for more than a few months.

TBF, I've only had LFS ones, not home bred ones.

Flutter do you know of any ram breeders in the UK?? Been looking but only found online sales sites
