damsels, pseudochromis/dottybacks, basslets, some wrasses

Reef Safe or Not
Size of Tank

And by reef-safe we mean, do you want the fish to co-exhist with corals and small invertebrates (like nails, hermits, etc). Clownfish are probably the best starter fish out there to be honest. They're hardy, colorful and reef-safe...

ahh i see, well he hasnt actually got anything yet, but i know hes definatly going for a reef tank - and a very large one (we were looking at said tank in the store, no idea by eye what gallons it is
ill have to get back to you on that one :)

clownfish never fare well as starter fish. of course to me, a starter fish is a "cycling" fish. :D

I have to disagree. I started my tank with two clownfish with no problems whatsoever. I also know plenty of others on this forum and elsewhere that reccomend clowns for being hardy great fish for beginners. They eat anything, they never jump, are always open water swimmers on display. They get alon well with almoast all other fish, they dont nip corals and mine have been really hardy. They may be "cliche", but are great starter fish in this humble aquarists experience.

Have to agree with Ski

I have started 3 Tanks with Clowns

There is no need to Cycle a tank with Fish when you can use LiveRock

well if thats what you prefere to do to the fish, but alot of people do like fishless cycling its not cruel, and i think a clown because its my first fish and hes still swimming happily after 4 months ;)
